Who Uses A Vibrato Bar ?

Post by kenposurf »

The topic of vibrato bars and their history and use came up in conversation here recently so thought to pose the question to forum members. First..why does Fender and most others call the bar a "Tremolo" when it is a "Vibrato" and conversely, why is "Tremolo" on an amp called "Vibrato"? So...who uses a whammy bar..how and why..hmmmm?

Who Uses A Vibrato Bar ?
One of my ex girlfriends used to keep one in her hand bag. Oops, sorry, I misread the thread!

Are you kidding?! My right hand is practically glued to the thing. I probably use the whammy bar in one form or another on practically every song. :D :D :D

I've always heard the misnomer attributed to Leo Fender; his not knowing the proper terminology. And it largely stuck; hence, so many others following suit.

Word. The Strat did it.

I tend to use it more with my Fender Jag and my Bigsby-equipped guitars than I do with my Strat. Every now and then I'll use it on my 325v63 or Maestro-equipped Firebird reissues.

For surf style, dips and shakes with the bar are the thing. The subtle style of Hank Marvin is really something..Jimi, SRV, EVH...for me it started with Duane...big surprize :)

No vibrato to speak of, but a definite "Rick Sighting" behind the sax player...in the midnight blue variety. 8)
