ONE AFTER 909
In celebration of my 910th post, I give you the rooftop performance of... the one AFTER 909!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnKbPSRyDo8
easily one of my favorite Beatles songs! I just love the rooftop version! George is on fire in this one! That stinging telecaster tone is unbeatable!

Now that's what I call rock'n'roll! Isn't it interesting that it took them what? ten years to record that song to their apparent satisfaction?

It's one of their most fun "basic" rock tracks. I'm glad that they did revisit it when they were going back through so many of the other material from early on during those sessions.
Re: ONE AFTER 909
Great stuff..... but why do I still prefer the 1961-2 version?

I rather like George's solo on the '69 recording better than the earlier ones, especially the '63 demo.

Totally agree.... Also, the Decca auditions.... possibly the worse sounding song I've ever heard.... terrible intro, and it sounds alltogether terrible....jimk wrote:I rather like George's solo on the '69 recording better than the earlier ones, especially the '63 demo.

BLASPHEMY !!
The earlier one ROCKS and for you'all in bands, it's a SURE-TO-PLEASE dance number for small gigs... when played rockin fast like the original version (or even more rockin fast... and it's GREAT FUN to play)
Also, just to clarify, not sure if you meant that 909 was part of the Decca audition, but it wasn't. The thing about the Decca setlist is that Brian Epstein told them to do their lighter show-tune songs and not their rockers. Thus we wound up with songs like "Till There Was You", "Bésame Mucho", and "September in the Rain" which is quite possibly the worst Beatle song ever recorded. When they were turned down by Decca, John Lennon largely placed the blame on Epstein.

Kinda always wondered what One After 909 would sound like in the hands of a good rockabilly band. I can hear it, can't you?brammy wrote:

I love the rooftop vids...I don't care what anyone says, I think they were having a good time, and it shows in their playing and singing.
I always wonder what those cranks who shut them down must have thought years later--how long would the concert have lasted if various panties hadn't gotten wadded up?

They sure were having fun, it looks like. One of the more happier times from the "Let It Be/Get Back" sessions.
According to sources, they did two back-to-back performances of "Get Back" (one as a soundcheck, the other to start the show), "Don't Let Me Down" (appears on the film and "Anthology", with the verse "And now she really done me bloody good! (laughs) Ooh, she done me, she done me good!"), I've Got a Feeling (film and Spector "Let It Be" mix), "Dig a Pony" (and despite the supposed remixing and remastering of "Naked", they still cut off Paul's opening and closing "All I want is..."), another go at "I've Got a Feeling" ("Naked" version), "Don't Let Me Down" (more serious than the first version, contains line "And from the first time that she really done me") and a final attempt at "Get Back" before they had to stop the show. The recording tapes also caught a few bars of an ending "God Save the Queen" before heading into the second "I've Got a Feeling".
Here's the performance of "Don't Let Me Down":

Re: ONE AFTER 909
I ilke the rooftop version best, mainly because the older version didn't hang together as well. It still baffles me that, as great a bass player as Paul is, he couldn't figure out how to use two fingers to keep the 16th notes going. It's also rather baffling that no one had a spare pick to give him.lennon211 wrote:It's one of their most fun "basic" rock tracks.
