Re: Mmmm, blueboy
Strange... The further I see Blueboy in the rearview mirror, the more I like it!
Re: Mmmm, blueboy
Not a big fan of BB Ben?
If you want my input,,,,bring back turquoise. Never had one, but an awsome finish I think.

I think Ben was just glad to see the Blue Boys completed - I seem to recall him saying that it was a "challenging" finish.
Re: Mmmm, blueboy
The challenging finish was Blueburst, and Ben's posts about it were enthusiastic.86kubicki wrote:I think Ben was just glad to see the Blue Boys completed - I seem to recall him saying that it was a "challenging" finish.
I love Blueboy, it's my second-favorite Ric finish. (#1 is Azureglo). When it was COY I wanted to order a Blueboy C64 and replace the guard and TRC with gold-backed Plexi, like the original 60's Blueboys. But the dealer told me that you can't order a C64 in Blueboy. Could have been a killer looking bass.

1) Every tiny imperfection is perceptible thus slowing down production significantly until it's taken care of. This is an ordeal often times with the Blue Boy color. Our workers see positively miniscule specks and spend a lot of extra time working those out because they're sticklers for quality.
2)If I'm not mistaken the white guitars in the past had a nasty habit of yellowing rather quickly (more specifically, the lacquer yellowed). The new conversion varnish we use has a yellowish tint to it out of the can and I have seen some Blue Boy guitars on the line go from blue to yellow in a matter of days. Imagine what would happen with a white guitar.
Personally, I like white, but I get a headache when I think about actually producing it!

Hey Guys!
I just joined this forum, and what do I see? MY 4003FL BB being discussed.
Yup. I contacted Olivia's when I saw it go up twice with no bids and made a deal with them to trade my 2007 4003 Jetglo for this FL BB. My logic was that the 4003s in JG were/are flying out the door, and no bids on the BB, soooooooooo..
Long story short, I spoke with one of the owners, drove from the St. Louis area to Carbondale (about 140 miles), and made the swap. I was looking for a fretless when I bought the JG, but took what I could get. When I saw thie, I went for the gusto.
It is every bit as gorgeous as the pictures. Sound is exactly what we all expect. And, it has the Rick flatwounds (purple tops) installed and in good shape.
Of course, my JG was in equally excellent condition. I am a working bass player (Rock Road Band) here in the St. Louis area with about 38 years experience in studio/session work as well as live performance. I try and keep all of my equipment ship shape all of the time. I also play a Thunderbird (Gibson, not Epi) and a Gibson SG Special for the shor-neck work. I run 'em all through Markbass amps. I use a splitter with the Ricks and run a Markbass CMD 151P with a 151HF extension cab for the bass end and a CMD 102P for the treble side. The sound is AWESOME!
Thanks for the kind words about the bass. It is every bit as great as it looks. And, the guys at Olivia's were not that hard to deal with, and I found them reasonable with the trade details.
Looking for ward to being part of this board,

Congrats on a good idea carried to fruition, Chuck. And welcome aboard. I would say you need to post picks, but topping Olivia's pictures would be tough!

Re: Mmmm, blueboy
I'd love a BB 4003! I think the problems with yellowing, or rather greening, since blue+yellow=green, were a headache as well. I think the new finish materials eliminate the possibility of that occurring now, IIRC.

Hey, Guys!
I'm new to this forum. Imagine my surprise when I saw you all discussing MY bass......
I, too, saw this on Olivia's site on eBay. I went the extra mile and wrote to them and offered them a deal involving my 2007 4003 Jetglo. Long story short, they took the deal. Seems that a fretted 4003 in Jetglo is selling a lot easier than the fretless BB. In any event, I drove down from the St. Louis area and did the deed. It's here with me now, and every bit as gorgeous as it looks in the 42 pics they posted.
I am a giging musician here in St. Louis and will use this in a few instances. My main is a new Thunderbird (Sunburst) (not the Epi!) backed up by an SG Special (Natural Blond). I play through a pair of Markbass amps (CMD 151 and CMD 102H with an extra front ported 15).
Thanks for the kind words about the BB. It looks and sounds GREAT!!
As for a little question.... Has anyone used the FretFX led systems? The dots on the BB are in the standard dot position, not where the frets would be. It makes the fretless BB an even greater challenge than other fretlesses where the markers are at the fret positions. Just a thought.... They claim that the systems can be removed with no damage to the instrument, although you do destroy the dots. Anyone have any experience with these?

Well, that was weird. I looked and couldn't see my first post, so did another one, then they BOTH showed up! Sorry for the double post.
Any thoughts on the Fretfx systems?
Thanks!
