TRC - real or fake?

Post by TheWonders »

After reading this forum awhile, I think this TRC may be a fake - what do you think?

Most definitely! Especially, with such a low starting bid, that makes it pretty obvious.

Zooming in, it sure looks just like the one on my V63.

You may be right, John, but what's with the really low starting bid?

He may not realize what he has. After all, he's had it sitting in a drawer since the 80s.... It is up to $26 as I post.

Why pay more listing fees than you need to? He will know for certain that it will go for a good price once bidding starts.

A low Buy It Now is suspicious, a low auction starting price is just avoiding wasting money.

That said it looks a little odd - the Rickenbacker logo is somehow in sharper focus than the rest of the TRC, almost as if it's been Photoshopped on, and the plate itself looks like solid white plastic not back-painted plexi. Maybe just a trick of the photo flash or the jpeg compression though.

He says 1980s. My question is: were these vintage-style plexi TRCs commonly seen in the '80s? What model would have had a plexi? My vintage ('60s) Ricks had these, and my vintage reissue ones have 'em, but my standard ones from the '80s all have raised letter TRCs, as have every '80s Rick that I've ever worked on.

Sorry for my ignorance on this--the TRC dates are not completely solid in my mind.

Reissues - 4001v63, 360v64, 325v63, 1997, 1998, etc.

I don't know if this is important, but the plexi TRC I have on my '74 360 has the "made in USA" at right angles to the logo, between the two screw holes. This one is different. Might not be significant, but just wondering.

Mine for comparison. And to me zoomed in, the one in the auction looked like plexi. Sarah, they have been made a few different ways over the years.

It looks like the vintage TRCs on a couple of mine. It looks like the real deal to me.
