Finding Rickenbackers In Canada

Ok, what are your favourite spots to find Rickenbackers in Canada?

I have found Rickenbackers showing up at Folkway Music and the 12th Fret.

I got my 6 at 12th Fret.
I got my 12 on eBay. A very nice guy from London ON was selling it, and he agreed to meet me half way on delivery (geographically), so I drove to Kitchener & got it from him in the parking lot of a Boston Pizza. He must've thought it was a setup, because he brought a friend along. (I had my brother, his wife & stepson sitting on the patio of the restaurant, watching. Call me paranoid.)
Capsule Music is just around the corner from my office, and they seem to get a decent number of Rickenbackers. I know Steve Wood has sold some stuff through them.

Capsule Music and The Twelfth Fret in Toronto seem to be the best bets for used Ricks in TO. Paul's Boutique in Kesington Market is also one to keep an eye on. I have a loop of smaller "mom and pop" shops I keep an eye on in southern Ontario, but unfortunately Rickenbackers don't show up often.

You didn't happen to snag an NOS 610 a couple of years ago from some place in Hamilton, did you? I saw it on the bay and was really tempted, but didn't have the funds. IIRC, it was a silver 12 string from the early 80's complete with the original shipping carton.

I remember seeing that one Greg. I used to go down to Hamilton occasionally to the Fbass shop (they also made Hammertone instruments), and popped into this other shop one time. It was a weird little shop with the silver 610 - as I recall there wasn't much stock. I also recall it was very pricey and the sales person (owner?) gave off a strange negative vibe - I certainly didn't feel welcome there! Do you remember what it made on Ebay?

I think it had a BIN of around $1100, but I could be really wrong.
They also had a JG 650 at the same time. Maybe I'm getting the prices confused.

I got my first two through special orders at Long and McQuade, but only because I had a friend who worked there and I got a great deal. That was over 10 years ago though, and I've sold both of them in the time that's passed. Since then I try to buy at Avenue Guitars here, or through The Music Zoo in New York. Like everyone else, price matters and I've saved a significant amount of money buying from The Music Zoo. I still have a 370FG on order with them.

The only place I've ever seen a Rickenbacker in stock, Steves Music in Montreal. A 360 and a 350, both in jetglo, though the 360 looked rather gray, and the 350 was truly jet black.

If anyone is looking for anything, let me know and I'll check with Brian at Avenue Guitars. I think he has a 660-12MG, a 1996 and a couple of 360's. The 660-12 and 1996 have been there quite a while, but 360's don't last long. He gets used stuff in from time to time too.

I have had zero luck with stock at Steves here, just bad timing on my part I guess. I was there last week and the salesman told me they now only sell them through special order, no more stocking. Every one I have seen shipping to them is spoken for. Their prices are currently running 30-45% over the Ric list price (after accounting for currency conversion, transport and customs brokerage). Like Steve Wood found in the shop in Hamilton, I get a very negative vibe from Steve's Montreal. Not a happy place for me to spend huge amounts of change.

I see the occasional used one show up at Audiomanie in Montreal East. They have a tech there that knows them fairly well also, even though I do all my own work myself. I have spent some time with the fellows there and they do know what they are doing.

I bought my 660/12 and 350V63 from the US, and my 620 from a private recording studio I found on Craigslist.

Murch Music in Cambridge was my local shop and they always had 2-3 Ricks hanging around, with a relatively high turnover rate. Excellent and easy-going staff, too. But...that was before the major back-log set in, and I believe Long & McQuade has bought that store up, so it may not be the little Mecca it once was.

I bought three of my Ricks from sellers on ebay before the prices went through the roof. I bought two 4001 basses in local pawn shops. One of the basses is now in Virginia.

I think I have as many Ricks as I need now. At least until the next one pops up and needs to be purchased by me to appreciate it

The bass thing is funny...I bought a Fender Jaguar Bass about a year-and-a-half ago. Then back in May I saw that The Music Zoo was getting a 4003JG and it wasn't spoken for. I got a killer deal so I bought it too. So for about 3 months I had two basses. The funny part is I don't play bass. I traded the Jaguar in a couple of weeks ago, and the 4003 is still hanging on its wall hook. I think I've played The Jam's "Pretty Green" on it twice in 4 months and that's it. I'd feel guilty but its just so nice, especially with the new inlays. What can you do?
