He made it more complicated than it needs to be. You only really need to know the five basic, first position, so-called "cowboy" chords to be able to play anything anywhere and in any key.

If you can barre all five basic chords maj and min & 7ths up the neck you will know more than you ever need to. John Lennon was the master of that. It means you seldom have to move up and down the neck, good policy when you want to keep your eyes out for cute birds or flying bottles. Listen to him frailing out triplets in "All My Loving" like a machine gun; it's a hard part to copy, very hard even at half the speed he played it (never looking at his hands). If you are comfortable with taking the open "Dmaj" chord up the neck you can have a lot of choices for partial cord riffs while you're up there. Throw in some maj/min 7ths and you're Jimi. Some aug or 9th chords and you're George Harrison.
This applies only to pop music, I should qualify.

If that's not enough, try this:

Actually, Rolly (who is from NE Ohio) is known for this kind of playing. :D

This is a hoot!:

This the kind of playing I'd kill to be able to do:

I hope you enjoy this stuff. :D
