Saw and played a 360/6 with FWI

Post by JakeK »

I finally saw my first Ric hollowbody in person for the first time today...I walked into my local C&M Music center and I saw in their "New Guitars" rack a 360/6 MG with FULL-WIDTH INLAYS!!! I saw it from the corner of the car window...when my mom parked (we were working together somewhere tonight), I ran into the shop.

I asked my friend Aaron who worked there, "Is that a Rickenbacker?"
He said, "Yep, just came in!"
"May I try it out?" I asked.
"Hell yeah!" he said.

He handed it to me, as well as cable and a pick, and I plugged into a Fender Twin '65 RI. I started to play The Who's "My Generation". I couldn't believe what was happening, but I nailed the sound of the original recording. I was in shock. The Ric hollowbody sound was a new sound I had never heard when *I* played it, and it was wonderful. So I played a little of "Can't Explain". Nailed it, for the most part. Then I played bits of The Who's "Kids Are Alright", "Run Run Run", "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere", Bo Diddley's "Road Runner", The Beatles' "You Can't Do That", "All My Loving", "Ticket to Ride", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Twist and Shout", "I Want to Hold Your Hand", The Stones' "It's All Over Now", "The Last Time", "Time is on My Side" and "Around and Around" until my mom came in (she bought me some strings for my Fenders), and said, "We gotta get to dinner") so I ended with a couple bars of The Who's "Good's Gone", and handed the 360 , pick and cable to Aaron.

A lady and her husband said to my mom, "Your son sounds great! Most of the music we were hearing earlier was distorted, horrible noises, but this was a breath of fresh air!" or something like that. My mom said, "He loves Rickenbackers! What can we say?" Then Aaron asked me if I was interested in it. I said, "I'll think about it", but deep in my heart, I want a 1998 PT. The 360 sure gave me an idea of what to expect from the 1998, and I'm sure ready for it! The Ric hollowbody sound, a classic and wonderful sound. :) Why did I buy that Strat and that Tele???

If anyone interested in the price or the guitar at all, you can PM me for more info.

My parents think I'm crazy to sell such beautiful instruments and should keep them. They don't know about how I NEED MONEY!!! Plus, I dropped the Strat on its bottom strap button and gave it a nasty mark, which the repair would seriously mark down value. They both have some dings and scratches, but that's because I play the HELL out of them! :D Yeah, I am thinking about doing a trade plus cash deal to Emerald City Guitars in Seattle for their 1998 PT...I dunno, let's see what happens!

Seriously, though, that 360 is gonna leave some serious happy memories for me :)

If you can afford to keep them, Gary, they all look like a lot of fun to me :D Ah, but the responsibilities of ownership bear down on us all...

Played an '08 360/6 today at Chuck Levin's in Wheaton, MD.

Can't really say I like it better than my '93 330...a lot has changed since then. The FWIs, small headstock, and thicker neck profile are a big plus, but the new FG has lost some of its novelty now and is beginning to look a bit weird (maybe I'm spoiled!) Felt a bit strange, too, and I've played my share of Rickenbackers.

Maybe it just needs a good breaking in...

Gary, what's that doubleneck? I'm intrigued!

Jake, have you played many Rick hollows?

That one was the first Ric hollow I have ever played before. Really was a dream and a new experience.

I don't get it. Are FWI an available option now? It doesn't show on their website? Are they standard on the 360, because the blue guitar pictured under "models" doesn't show it either. No matter what, FWIs are awesome!

There's a brand new FG 360/6 at my local Ric dealer along with one in MID and JG (which looks charcoal in certain light). The new inlays are positively striking and the way that FG is starting to look could be danger for my cash flow.
