Strats and a Ric 350/12

Post by Nickcha »

This is a Gospel song built around Strats and a B3. I wanted to lay in a piano on the choruses to push them along a bit. But I had just gotten a 350/12v63 and decided to use it instead and kinda use it to just accent the fundamental chord movements through the choruses, and then hit the 12 a bit harder on the power choruses after the solo. I was really happy with the 'feel' the Ric 12 brought to the mix. I think it made it a bit more interesting than a piano and kept it primarily a guitar song. What do you think? Here's the song: Run To Him

For the Ric I just ran it into a '61 AC30, cranked it about half way and that was it...

I love it. Great texture to the song. The lead is fantastic. The overall delivery is captivating too. :D I would definitely want to buy this, if I heard it on the radio. Well done.

Guys,

Thank you so much for the kind words. Encouraging. I hadn't recorded in years, and friends have been on me to start laying songs to tape - eh, hard drive I mean.

Nice job, Nick. How much of all these instruments did you perform yourself? Sounds like you've still got your mixing chops intact. And what a great combo - that 12 string with the Vox. I was pleased by how full-bodied the Rick sounded. I notice that on a lot of recordings featuring a Rick-12, the treble is cranked to emphasize the chime, but the by-product of that is a thin guitar sound overall. I even love the LOOK of that Vox! What a great amp. Did you run the strats through it too, or just go direct? My only critique of this recording is that I would have liked to hear the guitar solo a little louder. It doesn't quite stand out as the featured instrument during the solo, but blends nicely during the fills behind the vocal for the remainder of the song. A minor point on an overall great production.

Welcome to The Forum, by the way!

Mark,

I played a couple Strats, so there's a bit of underlying layering. I used a '60 and a '62 through a '67 Plexi for the rhythm picking parts. And then I used the '62 Strat through the AC30 cranked to do those power chords from the solo onwards. I really thought that sound had some really nice harmonic nuances in it. That old AC30 will do it. I also played a Gibson Advanced Jumbo acoustic (J45 type) in there somewhat subtle. I had a friend do the lead, just because we had played together for years and I really like the way he interprets songs, so I wanted his 'feel', especially on those accents underneath the vocals. Other friends and band members did the keys, violin, bass, drums, and backing vocs.

There were a number of improvements I wanted to make, but you know how recording goes, you just have to stop at some point and live with it. :) My greatest concern was the lead vocal, which I did. I'm definitely not a singer, and I started out looking to get someone to do the main voc on this. But my friends pushed me to do it, so...I blame them.

BTW, I know exactly what you mean about pushing Rics too far into treble territory. It's a common mistake (I think anyway). I like a fairly deep rich sound with the Ric, so I'll use 412s or the AC30 (which can really be a warm/bassy amp, despite common misconceptions).

Very cool, Nick. I just finished with busy season so I'll be contacting you, maybe this weekend, about getting together again and rocking some Ricks and Voxeses. I gotta have you over to Tampa side this time! And of course I totally dig therecording man! Cheers, JD

Nick,

Very nice work! The drone of the violin into the strat lead just punches through with pure emotion. The whole song just gives a great
motivating vibe. Thanks.
