No Daniel, it is the typical 4001s with the mono output, no Ric'o'sound jack. I have plenty of time to think about what I would do on a refinish. It would probably have to be a solid color, one or some of the former owners liked to play their bass down low and does have some belt buckle gouges down into the wood on the back.

If I go with a see thru finish my guitar guy will have to belt sand the back and then work from there. I'd really rather not remove so much wood, with a solid just sand down enough to use a little filler putty and sand even, then paint.

I also thought about a Ruby treatment. Is that just Burgandyglo shot over silver? I thought I read where John Hall had said that's how they did it. Does anyone know where I can get a good picture of a 4001 in ruby, so my guitar guy can see in detail what one looks like.

A good way to recreate that finish is to use House of Kolors Apple red over a silver met base.
The candy color runs about $48 a quart then figure the reducer, activator, and clear.

Did you ever see the copperburst pearl V63 on ebay?

I never did see the copperburst pearl, sounds cool. I don't think I'd pearl mine, if decide to go Ruby, I just love the traditional Ruby look.
A friend said put the metal flake in it, like the G&L line has. I think that would be horrible on a Ric.

If I put Strike King lures emblem on the front maybe I can get them to endorse my refinish too. Spelled the same the fish the instrument, just might be sponsorship in the making.

Just one other question on a more serious note, this is a set neck Ric, are all 4001S models set neck basses?

No most were neck through, however there were some set neck 4001's, but it could be a 4000 that's been routed. The easiest way to tell is pop the guard and look at the route.

I did and the route is the correct factory route, with the cable route done with that Forstner bit like the type that John Hall made the comment about. I just got through re-stringing it, wow sounds great. I've only one complaint, the saddle screws are a bit worn and hard to adjust, I might need some more soon.
After cleaning and polishing, it looks pretty good, I'll have to leave some pics soon.

Is the neck in good shape? I had to slightly adjust the neck to improve the action on my 4003S
