Pete Townshend had the Rics from the famous "Smashed Rics on the Wall" pic stolen from him. He took them to some guy to get repaired. After the repairs were done, the man stole them. The 360S/12OS and a 1993/12 were sold, according to Paul Griggs, who bought the 1993.
That's not quite what happened. Pete has stated many times that the guitars in The Observer shot were given to a roadie, who had high hopes of fixing them for Pete's later use. The roadie continued to be employed long after he took the guitars, and the topic was never talked about until way later...when people asked Pete what happened to the guitars in those photos, and he had to retrace it to the fact that they were all disposed of years ago. There's a big difference between that and outright theft.

Now...Paul Griggs has no actual records proving that his 1993 was indeed Pete's, other than the slight comment made by a salesman at the time (possibly to help sell it despite an obvious repair). It is quite likely that the aforementioned 1993 was Townshend's, as there were few imported, but if that's the case....wouldn't all five of those guitars have resurfaced somewhere at some point (at least three were salvageable).

Cheers,

This is very sickening to hear. Peter Buck is the reason I got into Rickenbackers, too, although it's the 330JG he owned early on that was the inspiration to buy mine.

Here is a youtube of Peter playing it on the Letterman show here in the U.S quite some time ago:

We were all a lot younger then.

Apparently Peter played most of last night's set in Tallin, Estonia on his black Tele custom (that he otherwise only has been been using for a single song this tour). He also played a song or two on his Burgundyglo 330, and only picked up one of the Rick 360 "copies"/clones for the last two songs. A bit odd seeing that he did that when he has those clones available to him (and they supposdely are very close to the original). Could just be a general Peter Buck middle finger to everyone and everything though.

REM played in Estonia!? That is too cool.

"Tallinn" has two 'n's' by the way.

I missed this. I havn't been on the forum most of the week. I am horrified. Of course it will not be returned. I am not sure how on earth this could happen but I suppose there are always so many people backstage.

Stolen to order??

Peter is also the reason why I first got into Rickenbackers. He is such a friendly and patient man with fans. He really is a true star. I am gutted for him and for anyone who has had a guitar stolen.

I saw him playing this guitar only the other week at Twickenham. The 360 and the 620/12 were being madly photographed by an official photographer. They had been put on the corner of the stage (before the first band came on for this purpose).

Ironically, Robyn Hitchcock had his Tele stolen from a gig, some months ago when he and the Venus 3 were playing. It is too much for it to happen twice in a close circle of friends. Some people are such scum.

I think you are probably correct, Sarah. If it was stolen to "flip" for high money it might show up again eventually, but if a crazed collector really wanted it, or if it falls into a collector's hands at first flip it is likely not going to see the light of day (as far as Peter is concerned) again.

They are probably kicking themselves for not keeping a better eye on it.

It's not going to turn up on EBay, unless the thief is a total moron.
I think it will either get handed back n.q.a. for a reward, or be hidden for a very long time.

Disgusting. :|
