Best Amp for Ric bass?

When you go to the website,, click on "bass cabinets" then click on the model of your preference,,,it will open a new window detailing the model, scroll down and you see the color choices, blue is near the bottom before the "line X " option.

But it's listed as Purple!

Does anyone use Fender Bassman 100 ('72)?
I have an opportunity to buy one for only 500 eur with original 4x12'' box.
I think it will be nice tandem with my 4001 V63.

Buy it, if it's in good shape. That's very cheap. The major things to check for if it looks OK are blown speakers - the originals are quite ****** and only just handle the power barely, but you can upgrade them easily anyway - and whether the amp has been serviced at all, it's of an age where the filter caps MUST be changed if they haven't been already and you want it to sound its best and not risk a failure. This happens to all old amps, it's not a fault with this model. Old tubes on the other hand (and contrary to popular myth) are usually no problem at all as long as the amp hasn't been thrashed hard for years.

I checked speakers and found that bottom one missing. Other three are in excellent condition, so now I have problem where to find the 4th speaker.

Difficult, if you want an exact match - the speakers are long out of production and almost unique to this cabinet (only shared with the Quad Reverb combo as far as I know)... unlike all other Fender speakers they are 16-ohm, because they are wired all-parallel to give a 4-ohm cab. The only place you're likely to find one is in another Bassman cab.

I wouldn't bother - they aren't very good for bass. They have low power handling, a lightweight 'seamed' cone and are not very sensitive. This means that you have to drive them quite hard to reach a good volume, and then they distort in a not very musical way at low frequencies, even if they don't blow entirely - which is probably what happened to the other one in your cab, and it was then removed to stop it sounding awful. They're OK for guitar, but I wouldn't choose them if you're actually going to use it as a bass amp.

I would get four decent modern higher-sensitivity 16-ohm drivers of at least 100W handling each, since the amp will peak at at least 200W when pushed hard. For bass you generally don't want to overdrive the speakers at all even if you're using amp distortion, so another factor of two margin is a good thing. Eminence do several speakers which fit this description as far as I know, which are probably at least in the same tone ballpark as the originals.

Or, just start with one and see if the other three speakers do actually sound OK, you have nothing to lose really.

I have a 70's Bassman 100 with 4x12, and a V63. The amp has a great tone and is great to record with. The baffles in the 4x12 boxes can get rattly, but a hot glue gun should fix that ok. It's awesome for small to medium sized gigs, but I find it is a bit underpowered for the larger stages. You need to be on top of servicing as much as you can. The amp is bulletproof, and will probably never break down, but you'll need every bit of juice from it that you can sqeeze out.

I use an Ashdown ABM EVO 500 with a Sunn 215S cab loaded with Altec lansing 421-8H's. The bottom end will bend trees, and I can get anything from the Entwistle Alembic growl ("Eminence Front" from Face Dances, "Talk Dirty" from Too Late the Hero) to the classic Macca "With a Little Help From My Friends" and just about anything in-between. And that's just in mono!

My Ashdown ABM rig really keeps up with my 4003s in a way that gives a vintage tone but doesn't overly colour anything. I really recommend it. I converted after several years using an Ampeg rig and getting frustrated at it.

My new MarkBass R500 just arrived today -- can't wait to hear how it sounds. It's not much like a Little Mark II, as it has a tube pre and is voiced a little different. I've heard good things and got a great price on it so I made the leap. No cabs at home right now (just a 15W practice combo), so it'll have to wait for the weekend. I know we have some MarkBass fans here; has anyone played through one of these?
