Once more, with feeling...

Post by sloop_john_b »

Do you think that RIC needs to market themselves to a younger generation of guitar buyers?

If so, how can this be achieved? Budget models (reviving the Electro line as suggested by grazioso)? New Limited Edition models for new, lesser-known Rickenbacker users? Running advertisments featuring these newer Rickenbacker players?

Or, maybe they need to change nothing.

Let's keep 'er civil.

Just curious. Who's the youngest or most recent artist to get an LE model named after him or her?

She was also arguably the only one to receive a LE model during her & her band's "heyday".

Which young artists would be good candidates for new LEs, do you think?

As I said in the (now gone) thread, a LE model for a lesser-known Rickenbacker user would provide both a wealth of new publicity for the artist/band, as well as a means of satisfying Rickenbacker customers (and potential customers) who have been waiting for a certain reissue, or are just interested in a unique model.

As for who, I'm not sure exactly. I have recently seen the guitar players from Kasabian, Against Me!, The Decembersists, You Am I (Wouldn't mind a 360F RI :)), Radiohead, Editors, Death Cab For Cutie, and Interpol playing Rickenbackers. All candidates IMO.

Add to that the Kaiser Chiefs.

As much as I don't like the band that much, the only candidate for a LE model (based on popularity with guitarists, and with the general public), Is Peter Buck of REM.

Yea, but what would it be? 360JG with a "trucker mama" sticker and heavy strings? Not different enough from a stock guitar IMO.

I think Peter Buck is a good candidate, but he's not exactly a new artist. He should have gotten his model in the eighties or early nineties.

I'm not sure, but in the pics in the Artist section it looks like it has different bridge saddles, has been refretted with slightly heavier wire and might have had the board stripped. (At least, it looks remarkably like my 381 which has had that done - not be me.) And of course it has 80s High-Gains, which are quite different to current spec and which personally I think need to be reissued on at least one model.

And - importantly to me - it has the older and IMO correct pre-1996 360 body shape.

What if there was a "Players' Series" with any popular mods that musicians make? This could be anything from hotter toasters to bigger fret wire to stripped boards, tailpieces, etc. As I said on the other thread before it was shut down, are there really any artists that are mainstream enough, or at least recognizable enough, to back a campaign?
