I suppose that this is simply another extension of the debate that surrounds all sorts of "special" guitars, signatures, replicas, relics, time machine, etc.
Re: Once more, with feeling...
yeah no kidding. if they made 12 string DCM it would sell like hot cakesI suppose it's up to the individual purchaser if they are looking to double the money they payed for their DCM's, though they don't seem to be selling at the prices people are asking at the moment.

In a word.........grazioso wrote:yeah no kidding. if they made 12 string DCM it would sell like hot cakesI suppose it's up to the individual purchaser if they are looking to double the money they payed for their DCM's, though they don't seem to be selling at the prices people are asking at the moment.but they in their infinite wisdom .... it is back to collectible and non-collectible and i certainly rather have great normal guitar than signature model and most of all i'd rather have that 360/12 with wider neck and frets that are taller maybe even stainless and i take it even in pinkglo (or whatever) than any other guitar, signature or not. c'mon! we all know they made couple like that for so called "big names" so why not let joe schmo have one too? do i really have to have it made somewhere else?
Yes!

Agreed. Like I mentioned in the vanished thread that spawned this one, I'd like to see RIC get caught up on the backlog so they can start taking custom orders again. I've envisioned one or two guitars that I'd like to have built... they vary a bit from the "off the rack" stuff which is currently only being offered. Too bad that I'll probably have to have them done elsewhere if I really want them within a reasonable time frame.grazioso wrote: c'mon! we all know they made couple like that for so called "big names" so why not let joe schmo have one too? do i really have to have it made somewhere else?

I think the limited edition signature series is a bit overdone. Every maker and every player has one. How many Clapton signatre guitars are there anayway? My son is 25 and he owns 3 Rickenbackers. He learned from me. Go out and teach your young ones the right way. That will take care of things.

Re: Once more, with feeling...
This is an excellent topic!
Too bad I have nothing worthwhile to contribute.
Regardless; as opposed to an artists series, I'd rather see a different "Year", produced periodically, i.e., '68 4001, 66 360/12, and so ooof.
Another pointless: Whenever I see a new or emerging (read young) band on the smelly and there's a Rick in the band, I tend to think this is an intellectual, hipper-than-most band.

I tend to give a band a little more credit when their instruments feature a Ric. They also get the nod if there is more to the gear than a Marshall stack and a Les Paul.shamustwin wrote:

i do not care what the band plays on. i am trying to listen. i saw yesterday on pbs reo speedwagon show. they looked like well reliced people. ...i noticed they played just whatever, i even think i saw buch of ovations there. the gear doesn't matter that much. and the reo music is not much my taste but man they played awesome for their age!

Re: Once more, with feeling...
I do think they're stupid though. I'm so glad the C-series doesn't have the Beatles' names smeared all over them.
Re: Once more, with feeling...
OK, so we've seen a number of younger bands playing ricks, which means their fans will pick that up and thus the saga continues. What part in that process do the signature models play, if any? They're clearly priced for the collector market so I can't imagine the young guys actually buying them by the droves, but maybe they add prestige to an already distinguished product line and will attract the kids to the more affordable players. Then in 20 years they'll be able to afford the collectors. I do think that RIC will always be wed to its historical legacy, but when the Beatlemania runs its course
who will represent for the following generations?
Are they depending on the oil-rubbed modern numbers to carry on the trademark, and if so, I wonder if those are reaching the hands of young players.
They seem to have all the customers (and more in waiting) that they can satisfy, so I can understand why there won't be any new models (an economy bolt-on or two, for example) for a while. But could RIC be undercutting their collector's market 20 years down the road by not cultivating a new crop of Rickenheroes?
