Your Next Song & With Which Ric ?

Post by goofyfoot »

It's Saturday morning. You're sittin' down with your Rickenbacker comfortably resting in your lap. It's plugged into your fave amp. Hmmm, today is a good day to learn a new song. What song is percolating in your cranium, asking to be sung and played? What Ric will you reach for to help you get to where you're heading?

For me, that song is the Gerry Goffin/Carole King-penned "Goin' Back" from the The Byrds' "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" album (Columbia, 1968). It's a poignant reflection about lost childhood innocence. McGuinn plays a tasty, yet subtle and subdued, 12-string on it. The 12-string doesn't create the soaring and biting leads but it does add just enough to the song production. Los Angeles in 1968 was not a good time for The Byrds, or what remained of them. But maybe those cats do look back on that time as halcyon days. I dunno. I remember scoring the LP at the PX when I was growing up as a DoD brat on Okinawa. With no expectations, it turned out to be epiphanic.....yeah, like a freight train rolling out of the Plains. Some albums, particularly the more obscure ones, creep into your consciousness and make a permanent home there. It underscores just how valuable music is to the individual and to a culture.

Trust everyone is having a shining weekend. Back to my 330/12 AFG. Peace, out.....Goofyfoot.

I'll do a little "let's pretend" here. Yes, it's Saturday, well afternoon, now. All the chores are done. The new 360/12 string is plugged into my Kustom. I think I'll work up one of my own songs first. Then I'll mess around with some of my favorites from years back.

Sheeesh. Timeless. What a classic! You go, Thor! What a coincidence --- "Thunder Road" chosen by the Norse god of thunder. Keep on keepin' on, brah.....uuuhh-errr, I mean, Sir. Peace, out.......Goofyfoot

I've got one for you. Plenty of ricks in here. The lead guitarist is an old bandmate, Mike Wilhelm, who ran with The Flamin' Groovies for several sorties over Europe. He and fellow Groovies Chris Wilson and Cyril Jordan both played ricks and gretsches. Cyril loved his transparent Dan Armstrong too. I always loved this song, knew it once when it was hip, but it washed into the backwaters of my memories for years. Now I've been searching out my old buddies online with some success and this favorite hit of theirs has been in heavy mental rotation for some days...

Cool choice by the FGs, Kira. It has that late 60's-early 70's vibe to it --- melodic yet with an edge. I snagged a copy of their "Supersnazz" album not long after its release in the late 60's. Think I wore out some of the grooves on that LP. Best regards.....Goofyfoot.

This morning we've got a bit of "Buckaroo" going with a 330BBR with toasters through a blonde Deluxe Reverb.
Doesn't get much better than that.

No it doesn't, Craigger.....and a fine Sunday morning it is here in Socal. It's the third day of autumn-like weather with a warm-up forecast for the next two-three days. The Carolinas must be gorgeous right now. Late.....Goofyfoot.

Let's see, let's just PRETEND I have my dream Ric (1997 FG), and I'm plugged into my new AC-30 or Deluxe reverb (pretend, you people! ). All of a sudden, I hit an "A". This sounds good, I know what to play!:

BTW Dave, don't stop at Goin' Back, the entire album is worth learning(but that's easy for me to say as I'm just the bassist)
