Finally some pics!

Post by weemac »

Well I've been here for a number of years I thought that I should at least try to post some pics of my Rickish things....
trio (450 x 600).jpg
The trio is from left to right:
1. something that looks a bit like the other two but infact is not (it's an Aria) but we can ignore it for now!

2. 74 red dot 4001 "Elouise" I got this off the bay as a carcass It had been badassed and schallered and was missing it's trc and all electronics and some overt routing work (done with a phillips screwdriver by the look of it)
It now sports current Rick machines, period corect bridge and tail, 70s pickups glued back together by me and rewound by Sergio (I had to fabricate a bassplate and low profile cover for the treble one), early 4003 pots and switch and jacks.
I have not been able to get a period correct pickguard (and the allparts ones are just plain wrong!) so I reverse engineered one from Photos etc to look like it is meant to be there even including the tape on the inside (However I only had some black acyrilic so it now has some attitude!). I have a late 70s creme TRC for If I ever sell the bass but for now it has a black Plexi one that I accidently made one day (If anyone out there has a real one, If the price is right I grab it!)
It plays well and has that slightly farty 70s sound! It is my 4 string bass for live work.

3. 64 Rm1999 "The holy grail" This bass went to bass hell in the 70s (too many head stock breaks and bridge mods and dodgy repairs) and was consigned to its case for some years until a kindly luither took pity on it and reserected it.
I believe the machines are from a Gibson bass from the same period and the bridge and tail currently are a rather beat up 70s unit. It has rotos fitted to it and sounds very much like CSs bass does now (Not like it did back then!) The neck pickup has degaussed a bit and the Horsie needs constant attention and drops it's gauss every 12 months or so..waving a soldering iron somewhere near it seems to kill it too. Farting in close proximaty to the Horsie would probably degauss it as well....
When it is in a good mood and the Horse has recently been fed it is a sonic wonderland! It plays really well!

More pics coming up!

Eden, you are like the Mother Theresa of wayward classics. My beret's off to you and my headstock rises to form an arch of triumph with other appreciators of your ressurections. Wow!

Shhhh! (you can't say that here)!

I put the pic there for a tease The aria is really a fine bass in its own right it's just that it looks like somthing that it shouldn't!

As for the Rotosound strings the neck issues have been delt with in such a way that they should not come back. However I do back the strings off on the bass when I'm not using it for a while and once I've used my current supply up I'll start getting used to a lighter string. I think that 40,60,80,105 would work really well if you could find such a set....
Time for TIs perhaps?

Perhaps it's a bit like me, a haircut once a year if I need it or not! Truth is the way those machines (with no top slot) you either have spiky string ends or curly ones!

 True, but I have not yet converted the rm1999 to a 5 string with an active circuit, and perhaps a double overhead cam conversion, but it bares thinking about............. Nahhhhh! .... My stomach is not strong enough!
I have to admit that Jeff is very brave........
