Naughty words?
When mentioning other brands of guitars and basses around here, is it really necessary to use asterisks so as to not reveal the entire name (as if there was any doubt, anyway)?
We already get a bad rap here for being fierce brand-loyalists, something which I personally find to be unfounded, but treating other brand names as if they're swear words isn't doing anything but making us seem awfully snobbish.
I like Fender and Gibson guitars, even if their business models are less then admirable.

Re: Naughty words?
I know I do that alot. When I type F*nd*r or Gibson, I do it for the humor aspect, nothing more.
Obviously RIC makes my favorite instruments, especially bass guitars. If I had any really terrible feeling against Fender, Gibson or any other manufacturer, why would I own instruments made by them?

Re: Naughty words?
I think it was initially done with humor in mind, then just kind of caught on with a lot of people. I like Fender, Gibson, Reverend, Martin, Gretsch, and so on. I'm even trying to move to Nashville and get a job at Gibson!
Re: Naughty words?
The asterisk thing seems like just a bit of gallows humor that's caught on, really.

Nashville as a city has it's own charm and attractiveness. However, if it's a guitar job you're looking for, there are some HEREblueflamerick wrote:...I'm even trying to move to Nashville and get a job at Gibson!

Point well made, John. I don't think Fenders and Gibsons are bad guitars at all, in fact I have more Fenders than Rics (2 Fenders:1 Ric).
And Gretsch, I love Gretsches as much as Rics. In fact, my "plan B" to if I don't get a Ric RoMo RI and VOX AC-30 HW2 is to get a Gretsch G6120-1959 Chet Atkins and a Fender Custom Vibrolux. Saving the dough for either one, though.

Re: Naughty words?
The words Fender, Gibson, Gretsch and the like have been used in this Forum and its early predecessor for a decade now. I quite agree that blocking out certain letters was introduced as humor and nothing more than that.
As Kira has so nicely pointed out, it is all about the attitude that accompanies many posts, Rickenbacker and others, and not the mere mention of another brand that has upset some.
All I have asked from the beginning is that the choice of one's post be determined by the content. Rickenbackers under Rickenbackers and others under non-Rickenbacker topics. This way it saves me from moving them and then having some posters feel they have gone into file 13.
The fierce branding reputation if it exists at all is over-exaggerated in my view. Again, it is how things are said that makes all the difference.

Re: Naughty words?
Excellent point, Joey, and I think the general opinion that the asterisk has been used in a 'tongue-in-cheek' manner is correct. I see no problem using the names of other brands in any area of the forum provided it's used in a Rickenbacker context - e.g. "Rickenbacker uses CV whereas Fender uses nitro".
If the post is all about other brands then yes...... whack it in "The Others" or "The Quest For Tone", where Joey has started an interesting pictorial thread.
..... with lots of pics of F*n*ers, G*b*ons ans oth*r g**dies!!!

Gibson. Mel Gibson. That's the guy.Clint wrote:What's a Gibson?

On a serious note — i agree with John B. This may be an inside joke, but somebody "from outside" may think, "d'oh, those R*ckenb*cker snobs" (no offence meant, really, just a "mirror" joke). The other question is, should we even care for the opinion of those "from outside"... everybody decide for themselves.
Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.
Re: Naughty words?
I have a Gu*ld Starfire III in my collection as well, is that a naughty word????
But I also have the other guitars that begin with F and G, and all my amps say F*nder on them..
Must say that my Gibson LP comes in handy for some tracks though, but I rarely use the Strat.
Overall, my Rickenbackers are THE prized guitars of my collection.......

Re: Naughty words?
A number of people get upset with the another group of people here who are here to enjoy discussing RIC instruments and trading info in a friendly, positive manner. They get upset with us for loving Ricks most. That is what this forum was intended for. Why is it wrong for me to love Ricks most above any other instruments?
Here's something I don't get...
Why is it okay for those few to point fingers at the ones who love Ricks above all other instruments and will defend that? They call us "Rickensnobs and that we are intolerant of other brands. Some people say negative and sometimes inappropriate things at RIC, JH and other forum members. Some of these people cannot and will not even bother to try to grasp the concept, reasons and laws behind RIC trademarks, even after having it explained a thousand times. Why is that okay? Why should that be tolerated?
If would expect a good number of people on a F*nd*r forum to feel the same way about the instruments they love best and the same for any other forum dedicated to a particular brand.
