Contoured 650D?

Post by freshmattyp »

One of the local stores here had a used 650D with a belly cut and an arm contour. Was this ever an option? I've personally never seen one like that, and I've played quite a few. This one also felt like the neck was significantly thinner than the others I've played.

Maybe that was one of the modded 650 Dakota's that Ed Roman sold at his now defunct store.

That was my first thought, but it still has the neck heel and stock pickups. The work was well done, the owner of the store didn't know it had been modified until I pointed it out.

If the had left the neck alone, it would have gone home with me. I have wanted one for some time now.

My '94 has the contoured body. Very comfortable. They're not like that anymore?

I'd never seen one like that before. All the other ones I have played were slab bodied.

Is the neck on yours on the thinner side?

I thought they were all like that. As always, a pic will clear all this up.

I took a look at my 2001 650D - it has more of an arm 'hint' and a belly 'suggestion'. Not as extreme as a Strat, for example, but it's definitely no slab. There's a distinct difference between the upper and lower edges. I took photos - they're not the best, but you should get the idea.

Here's the upper edge:

and here's the lower edge:

That contour is normal. MY 650C was that way from the factory. If you go to the factory site the description reads in part:
...this outstanding guitar has a sleek, sculpted body shape with extra contouring for ultimate comfort and ease of playing.
The contour is so gradual that it is not very noticable from the front or rear but it is very obvious from an edge shot as shown above.
