4004 clear coat fingerboard
Anybody had a 4004 fingerboard finished with a clear coat like the 4001/4003s ? The grain on my 4004Cii is so pretty I think it would look better glossy .

This one has CV on the fingerboard.

This one does not.

They both have a very nice patterns, I don't think it would matter much whether it is finished or not to show how how pretty the wood is.

Joey,
How does the different pickup placement between the two affect the sound? Also, is there any noticable difference in the "playability" of the two boards, since one is finished and one is not?

Ryan:
The 4004's with the pickups closer to the neck have a bit more low end rumble, the ones with the pickups closer to the bridge can develop a bit a of a J bass growl. Though the ones with the pickups closer to the bridge still have plenty of low end and the ones with the pickups closer to the neck will growl.
I personally do not find much difference in the playability between the finished and unfinished fingerboard. I played a '76 F*nd*r Precision which had a finished fingerboard for four and a half years before I got my first 4001. So I am used to playing basses with a finish on the fingerboard. I know there are several players that claim their fingertips stick to the fingerboard so they prefer to not have a finish on it. I really don't have much contact with the top of the fingerboard when I play.

Re: 4004 clear coat fingerboard
I put a little carnuba wax on that fretboard to protect it from my claws, which also really helped bring out its color. I don't know what Joey has done since, but it still looks amazing. I always liked its tone, too! Really a unique instrument, all around. Blueburst is a great finish.
