In My Life - acoustic cover

Post by tennis_nick »

I always wanted to hear what it would sound like with just acoustic guitars, in a mostly finger picked fashion, rather than wait for someone to do it, I did it myself.

It gave me a chance to finally try out my new recording gear, so that was nice, I learned a lot. The end result screams "inexperience" but I still think it's a decent shot at learning the ropes.

The end is.... meh, I had forgotten how it ended while I was recording and I didn't have another take in me!

Gorgeous really.
You captured the defining essence of the song.
Bravo!

Love the bridge section especially.

Fine work, Nick. You caught every little nuance of the song in instrumental fashion. Kudos.

Nick: A beautiful rendition of "In My Life." The moment you have captured is exceeded only by the joy of the listener. Well done.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Always one of my very favorite Beatles (Lennon) songs. "Yesterday" seems to get more recognition, but, "In My Life" is its equal and in many ways a far better song.
Great Job!!

Well done Nick.

Please expand on how you tuned and how you recorded yourself.....

Gladly!

The guitar is tuned down to Eb (I was jamming on some songs and I was having a hard time, so I tuned down).
While I was playing I was finding that my positioning was leading to sloppy notes, coming out buzzy and altogether not great. The solution was simple, I'm not singing anyways, slap a capo in there!

I picked one arbitrarily, turns out It was the 3rd fret.

The micing was rather sloppy. I had a small diaphragm condenser mic placed about 2.5 feet from the guitar just on table, and a large diaphragm condenser mic placed about 5 inches from the guitar on a mic stand.

I sent the signal to a Zoom H4 and used Cubase to split the channels and EQ/compress them equally.

I then overdubbed the "piano solo" with just the large condenser mic and a pick this time.

The mics are Audio Technica AT2020 and AT2021, they sell them rather cheapily in kits, and if you're thinking of getting started, I'd greatly recommend them! for $150 on mics, I couldn't ask for more really!
