The first time I saw a Rickenbacker IRL, other than on TV was a nieghbor that lived across the street, he had a band that practiced in his basement, he played keyboards, I was still in elementary school so Im going back to the mid to late sixties, the bass player was a huge Kinks fan and a huge fan of Peter Quiafe, he had a 4001s I thought then what a really cool bass it was and have always wanted one.

My first live Rickenbacker sighting was when I saw The Jam at CBGB's Theatre in Manhattan on March 31st 1978.I remember they all wore matching camel hair suits and I was mesmerised by Paul Wellers Rick.Growing up with the Beatles(I was ten when I saw them on Ed Sullivan)I always wanted a Rickenbacker.I mistakenly thought they were made in Germany and had read that John got his in Hamburg. When I saw Weller's 330 I thought it was the coolest guitar I ever saw.I remember thinking "Wow,a blonde Rickenbacker!" This confuses me now because in my mindseye I see him playing a Mapleglo 330 but when I see photos of him I only see him playing a Jetglo or a Fireglo Rick.I really wish I could find out what guitar he played that night.

For the live Ric Bass it was definately Rush. I saw them 3 times during my High School years in St Louis sometime between 1978 and 1981. The details are somewhat....................cloudy.......but I do know that I thought it was the coolest thing ever!

As for the live Ric Guitar, it was probably R.E.M. when I got to college. I was hooked.

Then that's when MTV was just starting to get popular (at least in St. Louis) and all they did was play music videos. I used to look for the Rickenbackers in the videos because they looked and sounded so unique. I bought my first one shortly after that.
