Popsicles and Icicles and the magic of youtube

Post by octagon »

Wow!I remember how hard it was to find a copy of this 45 back in the 80's.I had to search through boxes of 45 at used record stores, thrift shops or bid on auctions in Goldmine Magazine. Nowadays all I have to do is go to youtube, type in the title then click and enjoy this "Blast From The Past"!

"The Murmaids were a one-hit wonder all-female vocal trio (sisters Carol and Terry Fischer; and Sally Gordon) from Los Angeles, California.

In 1963 they scored a U.S. #3 hit with their first single, "Popsicles And Icicles" (Chattahoochee 628). The Fischer sisters were 15 and 17 years old at the time, whilst Sally Gordon was a friend of them both.

They had previously sung backgrounds for Mike Post. Kim Fowley was the in-house record producer at Chattahoochee Records. The song was written by David Gates, the future frontman of Bread.

In an interview, Terry said the girls were paid nothing for the record, and at the time had no idea how many fans they had. Their mothers were their managers, and kept them with Chattahoochee despite "calls from every major record company." Soon they were off to college; stand-ins were used in attempts at further hits.

Carol Fischer married jazz musician John Morell. Terry Fischer appeared in nightclubs and recorded albums for twenty years, appearing on numerous television shows."
