I saw my first Fake Rick today

Post by tennis_nick »

It was a 325 short scale Jay Turser copy, in a small pawnshop

The only thing that made it Rickish was the scale length, first time I played a short scale (it was nothing to complain about)

Gross spaghetti tailpiece, "toaster" pickups that sound NOTHING like toaster pickups, and a $250 price tag.

While trying it out I said "You know, I'm pretty sure it's illegal to sell these"

The salesman said " yeah, the trademark thing right?"

and he left it at that.

Let's just say that one of the major legends of ROCK, who continues to this day to be the biggest earning DEAD artists of all time got us all going on a genuine "kiddie" Ric.

I was shopping this past summer for an axe for my 12-year-old nephew and would gladly have paid $1K for that genuine RIC configuration, because it would have been EASY to play, and KEPT the KID INTERESTED.

The wretched copies don't come close. There was one for sale for a few days on eBay (a JC Penny clone).

We've all seen the pseudo-Ferrari or Lamborghinin bodies strapped on to VW chassis. Says more about the buyer than the seller.

When my brother and I were very much younger (and stupider?) we went down to the "local" pawn/music shop and bought the absolute latest 1966 ric clones -- one six string and one 12-string. I can just remember two young teenagers feeling that the Beatles must be geniuses if they could make that music out of these impossible-to-play beasts.

Now that I have the means to buy a REAL Ric here and there, I can understand why professionaly musicians don't buy cheap junk that gets in the way of playing.

That having been said, my favorite player is still an Epiphone SG400 with upgraded pickups and a Bigsby that I bought used for $250 on eBay.
