Yet Another Encounter With Stephen Stills
Yet Another Encounter With Stephen Stills
As a music journalist for The Aquarian newspaper, I was sent out to Long Island to cover a concert by the Stills-Young band and to interview Poco, the opening act. That's another story for later on.
I had some time to kill before the show, so I prowled around the hotel looking for trouble. I didn't have to go far.
I found out what floor Steve Stills was staying on and took the elevator up. When the door opened, I ambled down the hall and before my eyes was the irrascible Mr. Stills himself, sitting on the floor outside his room in his underwear, reading a newspaper and smoking a big cigar. Or, as I like to pronounce it a big seegah.
He wasn't a happy camper.
"Uh, Steve, what happened?," I asked sheepishly. Actually, I had to stifle a laugh.
"I locked myself out of my goddamn room, that's what happened, and I'm waiting for security to come up and let me in!"
"Anything I can do to help?"
"Nah!"
I said OK and took my leave, trying not to laugh out loud.
The concert was OK. Poco sounded better than Stills & Young did, and a few days later, Neil Young split the tour, leaving Stills holding the bag to finish the gigs on his own.
I'll never forget the sight of Steve Stills in his skivvies.

Bob,
Too funny...I've always been a fan of Still's music and believe he's one of the more underrated guitar players from his era. I have heard that he was almost impossible to work with...

OK, OK, at one point he must have said it, cause I read it and the press is always accurate.
