TRC noob question

Post by bb5000 »

Hello ,

Sorry if this is a noob question. I'm new to the ric side (and this forum; anyone here from the pit ?)
but just pulled the trigger on a montezuma brown 4003 (my 1st ric).
The trc is gold, but the pickguard is white . I always thought
factory ric's matched these ? Is this how the mont. browns are ?
Am I way off on this one ?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard Brian. Sounds like someone traded out the TRC on yours. If you want white, I will gladly trade a white for your gold one. Congrats on getting an elusive Monty too. Oh, pictures required!

Welcome Brain,

Ah, a Monty fan! You have good taste!

I've had about 5 or 6 of 'em, ALL had a white TRC & PG.

I've seen GOLD on some of the guitar models, but I've never seen one on a Monty Bass.

I'm not from the Pit, but there are a few of 'em here.

SO, again WELCOME...Congratulations on your Monty.....and as always........pictures are a must!

Welcome, Brian! :D

The PG and TRC should be matching, possibly the previous owner changed the TRC. My suggestion would be to have Pickguardian make you a gold matching PG, as gold looks great on MB. For best match send both the TRC and the PG to Tony.

As long as you have the gold TRC, why not have Tony make your PG shaped like the one I just had him make for me this past weekend, vintage style, but in gold painted plexi to go with the TRC?

Brian, welcome to the forum. I agree with Jeffrey's advise.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

It's likely you have a standard white TRC that has been painted gold, I betcha. The see-through Plexi, gold-back-painted TRCs are a little longer and the hole for the screw at the tip would be out farther. I also have a Monte, and I had Pickguardian make me a new gold-back-painted Plexi pickguard and he top-painted the white TRC to match. I have a feeling yours was done that way. If it is a gold Plexi, it's pretty rare and I'll trade you a . . . a . . . how about a bridge with poorly matched saddles?

Brian, if you bought this bass from Southside Guitars in Brooklyn, the TRC was a standard white one that had been painted gold.

That is indeed the ric sloop .
Seeing as you're from nyc ....do u work there ?

Thank u guys for all of your help.

I've been on a sort of quest to find a bass I like which is NOT a Fender.
Silly quest I know. I just figure although there's a reason for it
Fenders are on the majority of pop recordings. So...
I thought Gibson was the way and bought and flipped a few of those.
RD Artist, LP Triumph, a 70's EB-3and now I am going to flip a/an late 60's Eb3 to pay back the Monte Ric.
Love the Eb-3 but there is basically only 1 usable setting and it feels like a toy.
Not very versatile.
Somewhere in there I kind of gave up and bought an Antigua P bass.

I tend to gravitate toward the stranger non flashy/oddball colors. It was between Monte or Blue Boy.
Now I'm hoping the Ric will grab me . I've always loved the tone , early Geddy, Squire,
and Foxton. I hope this doesn't start some kind of player war but I think Foxton is the reason
I decided to finally pick one up. Going through a huge Jam phase again.

I was hoping that was factory ....I thought while looking up other mont. there was
a post in here w/ the same set up (gold trc) white pickguard. It Was under a fall colours
post?? does that ring a bell ?
I try and keep my basses stock so, am I limited to getting a painted pick guard to match ? I'm sure
to prevent fraud Ric just doesn't sell trc's right ?

Sorry for the girthy message , guess I'll see when it gets here.

Welcome Brian, and as Peter says, no need to apologize for asking questions.

You are right that RIC doesn't sell TRCs, but they do exchange them (at a price, of course). I suggest trying to trade with someone here before doing that, however, as there is usually someone looking to change the look on an instrument.

Another vote for having Pickguardian make a gold pickguard to go with your TRC.

Welcome Brian!

Is the TRC clear Plexi backed with gold paint, or raised letter? There was a RIC dealer who used to offer a gold plastic option, he'd swap the stock pickguard with an aftermarket gold guard, and spray the TRC gold.
