I must confess I'm on the same page, Evan :oops:

Paul sometimes uses an oversize plectrum for the fiddlier bits.

I started playing with my thumb in 1965 and stopped because -- if you're really old, you'll remember this song -- I couldn't play the little bass break in Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders' "The Game of Love." :oops: I switched to my fingers, then went to a pick when Chris Squire arrived. But I never could play funk very well with a pick (still can't), so I alternated. I still use a pick on my Hofner, but fingers on every other bass (except a Rick, if I still played one). However, I have been using my thumb a bit now if the song doesn't call for heavy attack or blazing speed. I'm not a slapper, though.

He has used M/B for a long time so I was surprised to see the Ashdown in that video.
