Brian, I also add a vote to get a Pickguardian guard backpainted in the same color gold. On a Monty that is the way to go. I hadn't thought of that in my first post.

#1 on the all-gold with montezuma-that would be beeyootifull. i am wanting a gold trc/pg for my maple v63,but basically i am too full of cheepnis to pay big bucks for a 4" peice of plastic....would love to see picture examples of the painted trc's ya'all are talking about if-that sounds like it might be a reasonable alternative for me.....

This is the one Pickguardian painted for me to match the "signature" pickguard on my Monte:

paul-that works! that must have been painstaking to paint around the raised lettering. my v63 has the clear plexi-could i spray paint the back? (or have pickguardian do that ?) and ken-i can't tell from the picture,is your trc raised letter or plexi?

The raised one is probably the easiest to change color. It's molded in white plastic, and I believe the black on the raised lettering is probably done with something similar to the silk-screen process. This is the way I would do it, anyway: 1. Paint the whole thing gold and let the paint cure. 2. Use fine-grit sandpaper in a block or taped to a flat surface, and sand the paint from the raised lettering. Reapply black to the raised lettering by pressing the inverted TRC onto a freshly black-painted flat surface. There may be ways of applying a "resist" or a semi-liquid mask to the already-black raised lettering before painting gold, then removing the mask revealing the black letters. Don't know what the "pros" do.

The silk-screened Plexi TRCs are difficult to change. When they are made, the black Rickenbacker is screened onto the back of the TRC first and allowed to dry. Then the back is painted the background color (white, gold, silver, whatever). If you're a graphic artist who has the ability to create the screen, it can be done, but RIC would frown on it, of course.

It is raised. Kevin Kuney (krick) knows the paint color from Duplicolor. It is a Chrysler color. If I recall right it's gold dust metalic but I am not positive. You can use a paint pen or Sharpie for the letters after painting. Notice the "Made In USA" is painted over.

I'd go with 3-ply black/white/black with beveled edge, like the Walnut 4002 prototype on page 211 in the Smith book. And a black TRC to match.

That was my next question. Seeing as mine is on a truck somewhere .....
Do the pickguards on the more recent 4003's (mine is an '04) have a bevel ?
and for those who have factory gold pg's , are they the plexis or solid ?
Plexi sounds like the way to go.
Did Ric ever do layered/ 3-4 ply guards i.e. w/b/w (like fender) ?
or b/w/b/w (like Gibson ; i think ; * checks Eb-3)
I don't think I've seen any on their guitars at least .

Bassduke49 - Do u have any full pics showing both PG and TRC ? If not don't worry about it.

Thanks so much gentlemen . Loads of help here. Getting my gears spinning.

The RIC guards are rounded.
Factory gold are plexi, and also gold w/black raised lettering IIRC - someone correct if wrong
You will have a hard time getting someone to swap you a plexi TRC, especially gold
Only on a 4002 were the guards layered

I don't believe RIC made a gold-painted, raised-letter TRC; all the ones I know of were painted after shippment from the factory by interested parties (either vendor or individual).

Here's a shot of the Monte with the special signature PG and gold-painted TRC. I cracked the PG and replaced it with the original white one since then; I think that's the one you recall from the "fall colors" thread.
