There used to be a mod band in Sydney in the early '80s called "The Sets" whose main attraction was a Pete-esque strat smashing. The story was that the guy used a Hondo strat for the particular set leading up to the mauling, so "low budget" was the word. Hard core fans loved it. My first thought upon seeing this was that they were a bunch of posers who had to cover for the travesty they made of other people's great music.

But when Pete did it, it had authenticity and originality. When you listen to his early interviews, there seems to be an element of rage just below the surface, never overt, ready to break out and trigger some dangerous act. The fact that the first occurence was accidental is wonderfully ironic. When I hear "My Generation", in my mind's eye I see Pete smashing a guitar with ferocious abandon. Iconoclastic? Heretical? All I know is I have always found it strangely compelling.

The Who doc was on a couple of night ago and I saw it for the first time.

Pete refutes the story on the first smashing.

The fable has always been that it started when the guitar hit a low ceiling.

In the film, he says he was banging the guitar in order to try and get a "boing" sound.

More power to him, maybe it'll up the desire. Its like that old line from Johnny Thunders' band "catch them before theyre dead"
"One Chord is fine, two chords is pushing it, three chords and youre into jazz!"
