Re: Songs we love to cringe at.....
Brian,
It's a "punk" version of an old 50's ode to Sydney (kind of like an Aussie "I Love LA"). The XL Capris were an inexplicably successful live act that never really made the top of the mainsteam charts, oddly enough. At the time, Sydney was awash with live venues and bands ranging from bona fide talent like Split Enz, INXS and Midnight Oil down to tosh like the XL Capris. I'm sure there are examples of over-hyped and under-talented acts in other countries...
Sadly, a reasonable number of my friends really loved the Capris and this song. I've always blamed substance abuse.

ABC
DOA-not the great Canadian punk band, that gawdawful spin me round round nonsense
Sigue Sigue Sputnik
INXS
Taco-puttin on the Ritz
Wham
Kajagoogoo
Frankie goes to Hollywood
Gary Numan
Billy Squier
The Eagles
Journey
The Cranberries
Just about everything by Elton John and Hall and Oates
Stevie Ray Vaughn-only because I had to listen to customers try to play his songs for over 10 years, he's a great player
Style Council
Cyndi Lauper-"Time after time" I've wanted to slam forks in my eyes
Motley Crue(especially their weak version of Helter Skelter, only to be outdone in the lame department by U2)
99% of all 80s hair metal
Anything Robert Plant sings(nails on a chalkboard to me)
And last but not least-anything I ever sang on( kind of like a moose being hit by a tractor trailer)
All of these make me wanna rip off my face and run down the street screaming

When I was younger, R&B used to be beer-bellied balding blokes playing 'The Stumble' in the pub on a Sunday lunchtime...
... now you get 4 or 5 women (or men!) all singing different tunes and going woah-oh-oh-woh-woh over some half-arsed beatbox and samples backing.
Guess what makes me cringe.
One of my less enlightened moments!

Re: Songs we love to cringe at.....
ok seeing as we're all family here this happened 2 years ago.
As usual i had been working right up to the mark at Christmas i call it the dining room season cause everyone wants there dining rooms decorated before xmas.So i was looking forward to my long lie in on Xmas eve.Anne was downstairs washing the kitchen floor the kids were playing in their bedrooms and i was in bed thinking of getting up and having shower. The radio was on in the bedroom playing all the usual when Slade-Merry Xmas Everyone came on! I thought ok time to get up.So im in my underwear(not a pretty sight)and head to the bathroom signing at full pelt "Are you hanging out you Stockaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...Unbeknown to me Anne has washed the bathroom floor with flash and it was still wet.So crash the whole house shook with my waif like husk landing on the tiled floor, and the radiator cut my leg on the way down( I still have the scar). So the Mrs and the kids run in and say are you ok,Im on the floor legs in the air with my underwear on saying yeah im OK.Anne says "Oh i forgot to say ive just washed the floor",Adam says "What are you like"Emma laughs and says"look at dads pants!" and I say Bl**dy Slade!

Celine Dion
Michael Bolton
Josh Groban
Why do these people have to pit a damper on things by releasing Christmas songs?
And Why did Hall and Oats re-do such a fine song in it's original (hit) form - Jingle Bell Rock?

I'll second Celine Dion. Anything she does makes me cringe.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

Well, then you must hear his collaboration with Allison Kraus. They must have tuned his vocals, cause he sounds better than he ever has, and I'm a Zep fan.whojamfan wrote:I would like to add(but not a complete list by a long shot)winston wrote:Anything by The Culture Club or the Thompson Twins................

Here is my pick for this category.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Totally brilliant Peter - I'd been searching for that vid and all the links were bad. I want to hide behind the sofa whenever I think of that song....
