I know that Ricks can have bugs--I really played it today for the first time. The standard jack works fine using both pickups, or using bridge alone. Using the neck pickup with fully seated cable, no sound. I pulled it out about 1/8 of an inch, so it's not secure--and neck pickup works. So--I'm figuring the jack is not seated deep enough to use a standard cable. Used several cables, same thing. Now, I'm not sending it back, so I want to intelligently explain the issue, and find a local Rick technician to do warranty work. Ideas, suggestions, experience???
The sound itself is great, and I would not expect to be using the neck pickup alone often--but.
Would a rational work-around be to use the stereo jack, and just dead end one signal of the Y, since you wouldn't be using 2 pickups?
Thanks, Major Tom [yeah, it's true]

Try a different cable. The standard jack is the mono one and should give both, one, or the other. Another thought is that the jacks are reversed. Try the other jack once and see what you get. Slim chance, but it is for free.

Try rotating the jack about 1/4 turn. The hole bored in the inside of the control cavity makes it a fairly snug fit where the big, switched mono jack has to slide in. If one of the jack's switch blades is resting against the wood, rather than being clear of it, it can cause things to cut out. Just loosen the nut holding the jack to the plate, turn the jack in its socket a bit and tighten the nut back down.

Thank you both. I'll give it a shot, report back, and then deal with warranty service. Not returning this baby, that's for sure. It's incredible.

If all else fails, the jacks are not enclosed and it's easy to see by inspection if anything has gone amiss. Pull the guards and flip 'em over, off to the side of the guitar. Loosen both jack nuts and pull them back inside the guitar. Now plug in your best cable and see if they both work properly. If they do, it's the pinch that Todd describes above. If not, the leaves can be bent to correct shorts and open circuits.
