Strawbs- Rickenbackers and Mellotron
Hey there pop-pickers...
Here are The Strawbs from around 1973 (wonder why it's black and white- industrial dispute perhaps?). Not one of my faves of theirs, but the vid is like totally porno. I was curious as to whether the bassist John Ford played a Ric- he had an excellent sound. Best Strawbs albums feature him anddrummer Richard Hudson IMO.
I've seen Dave Cousins' 360 before but not clearly, so can anyone tell if it's a six- or twelve? There are some flashes of headstock in the vid that suggest 12.
Anyway, a Mellotron 400 and two Rics.

Re: Strawbs- Rickenbackers and Mellotron
He's definitely playing a 12. The bass has an extra knob on it. The Paul is pretty sweet looking, too. Love the mellotron

I just love Mellotron's. There was one for sale at the Arlington show last year, I was tempted, but how do you get one home as hand luggage?

Looks like he thinks that bass is a guitar, cause he's strumming it like one
Re: Strawbs- Rickenbackers and Mellotron
I'm a huge Strawbs fan and my band does many tunes of theirs. I've seen them a couple of times recently in Toronto (in both their acoustic line-up and full band) and got the opportunity to meet Dave Cousins a couple of years ago. I knew they played Rics back in the day but I've never seen them strapped on. Great video. I don't know why this band never got the attention they deserved (even when Wakeman was with them). Cousins is an absolutely brilliant lyricist
Re: Strawbs- Rickenbackers and Mellotron
Ive mashed that ive never heard of this band before cause im liking them.Thats what i love about this section keep on hearing new,old bands or is it old,new bands.anyway thanks for the post.
Re: Strawbs- Rickenbackers and Mellotron
Try anything from "Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios" or "From the Witchwood" Scott. You can't go wrong (these are the Rick Wakeman years). Hero and Heroine and Bursting at the Seams are also fabulous albums.

Bill, thanks for that. Not only a link to Wakeman with the Strawbs, but a Curved Air video and Kate Bush and David Gilmour doing Comfortably Numb. Great link!
Re: Strawbs- Rickenbackers and Mellotron
Dave Cousins is playing a Rose Morris 1993 model. I am also nearly 100% positive that his particular 1993 is now in the hands of a certain Mr. P Towshend (his most intact and mint RM1993 in his collection)- sourced from guitar tech Alan Rogan, whom I believe got it from Cousins. It has a very unique TRC, and unusual trapeze tailpiece (instead of "R")
Coincidentally, it's also the same guitar featured on page 34 of the Bacon/Day Rickenbacker book.
and yes, I must sound like some kind of OCD anorak...
Cheers,
