Re: Ready to string my 620/12....any advice??
Expert Luthier Mark Arnquist posted detailed step-by-step instructions on re-stringing 12 string Rics a couple of years ago... check the archives vault here on the Forum.... believe it might be under "Vibrola - Technical Forum" section. Not sure if McGuinn recommended putting tape to help hold the strings in place, on the R-tailpiece, but that's what Arnquist recommends. Some folks hold them in place during the restringing by using their crumpled up polish cloth. Helps to have a lot of patience on doing the slot strings.
By the way, I just spent a good part of last Saturday re-stringing three Rics -- unfortunately somewhere in the process I ended up with a small string-scratch on the bottom horn of my 360-12. So you can't be careful enough.

Thanks for the advice!! (Feel kind of silly asking about stringing a guitar since I own about 20 and stringing up is 2nd nature!!) But when you look at the headstock on a Ric 12-string, you realize this is something different! I like the advice about a beer in hand.......I am German so that will work out well!! The McGuinn video recommends that you change each string separately........I have read somewhere else about putting a piece of foam or such at the tail-piece to keep the string ends in the slots.

Start at the outside and work your way in.

IMO, it's the same for life.
Re: Ready to string my 620/12....any advice??
The deed is done and man, the guitar sounds sweet!! Thanks for all the tips and encouragement......a little different and slower than stringing my guild 12-string but I guess my speed will improve with time!! I can now understand why some say to start from the outside............the tuners in the channels are a little difficult at first and I was trying my normal locking the string method and that was impossible! Now time to get that JangleBox!!
