You know John, my parents once told me I was left-handed as a small child and they more or less forced me to be right handed.
Lucky I can't remember the frustration of being so hungry and unable to use a spoon in my right hand... must have been horrible!
Now I play righty but still do a lot lefty, not quite ambidextrous enough, though.
It is unfortunate that so much of the world isn't too supportive of lefties. I feel your pain, brother... :?

Okay, quiz time:
(I don't know the answers, that's your job)

1.Is this (March 83) one of the last 4001 or one of the first 4003 models? Or neither?
(I know the knobs are wrong)
2.Is it Fireglo, Autumnglo or something else?

Ron, it is a later 4001 (no split guard, shedua stripe). The Grovers were used when the other style were out of stock in that time frame. 4001 basses are known to trickle out of the factory for a few more years. It is a beautiful fireglo.

Thanks, John. I am frequenting the bass forum on a "visitor's visa" so I can learn more about RIC basses in general and about my RIC basses in particular. Thanks to members like you I am learning something new all the time.

I also learned that there are some other names for shedua wood, such as ovankol and amazaque. Much more exotic than "skunk stripe"!

Don't look to close to the scunge around the toenails

That is a nasty neck crack, Mine had only been split up the board a bit. Mine has a chunk out of the headstock and a bit of reconstruction under the pickguard and tailpiece, not to mention a lot of finish missing of the back.
Hovever it plays really well so I don't care....

Yeah, that crack on the neck is bad, but it was repaired by someone somewhere along the line and seems quite stable. It's got lots of dents, dings, and holes in the finish, battle scars, but like yours, it plays GREAT! I recently picked up an '84 4003, it's a real beauty, but I just haven't warmed up to it. I like playing the ol' '76 a lot better.

Messy re-fret (actually used Bondo as a filler!), re-chroming of the tailpiece, original rods re-fitted, undo some bad nail polish touch-ups.
