Do you think this Vox Mark VI was worth $1500?

Post by octagon »

I was almost gonna pull the trigger on this 1965(?)Vox Mark VI except I would probably have to sell one or two of my guitars if I did.Anyway, what do you think this is really worth in this condition. Is this one "Made In England"? Anyone here have a Vox Phantom? I'd love to see any photos if you have

I thought these were made Italy.

Sounds about $500 too high to me considering the work that's been done on it--you never know about Ebay refins.

$1500 for a respray and replaced pickup is high. $1000 - $1200 would be more in line.

Why buy a guitar that is blown away by a composite guitar?

Seriously though, 500 too high, low value in the vintage market due to the refin. If you played it and really liked it, maybe, but you would most likely never get your money out of it, and next to nothing in trade at a shop.

Phantom Guitars seem to have accurate replicas of all of these old Vox guitars for around 800 bucks or so, and might be worth looking in to. I know nothing about how they sound or play, just came across them a while back on the net.

Good luck.

I really doubt that the neck was original too. It looks like a replacement from another '65 era Vox. Why the black neck and headstock?

I have heard the Phantoms are as good as (actually better than) the originals.
But buying an actual '60's guitar has it's appeal!

The new Phantom Guitar Works replicase arebetter than the original Voxes, but having an original is cool as well, and Phantom doesn't make my favorite Vox Teardrop model. :D If that Vox is worth $1500, then mine are worth even more; the two hollowbodies I have are a lot more rare and mine have all of the original bits, the lone exception being a Rhoads music replacement whammy bar handle for the Tobacco sunburst example on the left-far fewer hollowbodies than solidbodies were ever made:

They ARE better. I used to have a seafoam green Phantom Teardrop, and it played great. They are made in the USA (I think the neck and some other parts is outsourced though..), quality woods/finish- roller nuts and all modern electronics. I think they're one of the best values on the market.

My only gripe with them was the super thin sound. I think it was the single coils...they just didn't have any character in them. They were also a strange size/shape, so if Phantom could make a stacked humbucker that fit in the slot- they would be a serious guitar to play lead with.

But yeah....vintage is vintage, flaws and all. Part of the charm of a vintage guitar is that it's old, fragile, and sounds funky.

What a cool story!! The best part was sitting back and hearing (no visual) the "snapping" of the latches on the guitar case. For guitar nerds like me...that is one of the best sounds on earth- especially when you know there is a new (to you) guitar in there.

As for the provenance of his old guitar- it's a good example of why people should always write down the serial #'s of their gear! Glad he (hopefully) got it back.
