Looking for my first Ric

Post by Starscream »

Hello, I am new here and new to Rics. I have been intrigued by Ric basses for awhile and toyed with the idea of getting one but to be honest I wanted one without a pickguard. I stumbled across a 4003 LK and it blew me away. In what little I could find out about them they were a very limited run? Then I found a black 4004 Laredo and thats one I will gladly take. But if all else fails I will also take a 4003 in jetglo and just swap the white PG for a black one.

I am curious as to the neck thickness on the Laredo and also what are the going prices for them? It does not have to be pristine, it can be a 'players' bass and Im ok with that. Its not something I can lay down the funds for immediately but I am working on it.

Are there any differences besides the obvious between the 4004 Laredo and the 4003? And what is the difference between the 4003 and the 4001? I have also read where some find the Ric uncomfortable to play and why. I honestly don't see where any of these issues would be a problem for me. A friend of mine who had a Ric for some time (and just got a new 4003 back) feels I would love a ric. She knows basses I play, the sound I like and also owns some of the same models of bass that I do and her recommendation eased my mind even more about it.

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! You'll find helpful folks with answers for just about everything here!

Myself, The only Ricks I've played are 1970's 4001's and 1980's 4003's. The 4003 is pretty much just an improved version of the 4001, made with a stronger neck to work better with higher tension roundwound strings. That being said, I've always used roundwounds on my 4001's and never had a problem.

I got into Ricks when I tried a 4001 way back in the late 70's. I found I just loved the way it felt and played and never looked back. Some people don't like the edge binding because it apparently cuts into their arm (the 4001S & 4003S don't have binding). This has never been a problem for me since my arm doesn't touch the edge.

As for necks, the mid to late 70's are really nice, I like my '76 4001 best. I've got an '84 4003 that just feels different, but I can't really define just how, maybe a bit thicker, but I can't really tell. It just doesn't feel quite as good. I've heard there was a time when the necks got a bit thicker and are referred to as "baseball bats". The newest 4003's out are supposed to have the thinnest necks ever, I've never actually held one though (my new 4003's been on order since March '07).

Prices. Well, that's a good question. A short while back, the prices were going through the roof for used ones, especially older "vintage" 4001's. But with the recent economic problems prices seem to be coming down a bit. It's still possible to get a brand new 4003 for less than a used one though. Best advice it to watch Ebay and get a feel for what things are going for and watch the "Marketplace" sections of this forum. There are deals to be had out there.

Oh, and you'll definitely love a Rick bass!
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

The Laredo (and Cheyenne II) necks are a bit wider but are flatter and do not feel appreciably bigger in your hand. Both are comfortable necks to play. These two also have different pickups (HB1 humbuckers - deep, strong, growly) than the 4001/4003 basses (higain single coil - strong, biting, growly). The 4004L and 4004Cii are the new implementation of the RIC philosophy.

What's your budget? A brand new "aftermarket" 4004L on eBay will probably go for less than any 4003 in the same shape. They're just less popular. So that might be one way to snag a good deal.

I would try to buy new and secure a warranty if you can afford it. 5 years of free repair work is a nice thing to have--I did have to take advantage of it once already.

New 4003s are very versatile and if your issue is just with getting a pickguard/TRC to fade in to the finish rather than popping, you can get a black pickguard from pickguardian.com and I think you can trade your TRC for a black one straight from RIC. Correct me if I'm wrong guys...

Thanks for all the replies guys! Let me touch on a few comments made:

CJ Johansson and John Allgaier, thanks bunches for your comments. Now I know a bit better what Im looking at between the 4001 and the 4003. From what was said I think (if I didn't get a Laredo) a 4003 is exactly what I would want. Now at the same time I love 'buckers on a bass. I love the 'buckers on my T40 (uhm if I can admit this here, I am a Peavey NUT) and almost /always/ have my T40 set to its 'ric' tone. That is my favorite tone on it. So perhaps when it comes to the pups, the Laredo might be better for me. But, I love thin necks so thats a plus on the new 4003. I also know the years to stay away from as I have no like for a 'baseball' neck of any brand!

And yes, with the economic situation right now, I know T40s have dropped pretty hard and they had just started hitting the upper 3 digits, almost a grand range and now they are back to the $2-400 range again. I am very financially challenged so I might have timed this just right to get a Ric in regards to that. ^_^ I will also not stay so narrow in my search (as in just for a Laredo) but keep an eye out for new 4003s (the description of the new ones neck has me really intrigued).

Joshua Chandler, my budget is very challenging. I have several basses and most would be considered lower end to be honest. Though we should all know that means nothing to quality and sound but still. I will have to be selling off almost all my basses toward whichever Ric I end up with. Most of my basses are several vintage Peaveys, a vintage Yamaha, and a Squier VMJ that would be on the sell block. I would suppose those brands aren't looked at too fondly here, eh? :P I do have one classic Fender bass though that is not an option to sell though for a Ric (neither is my Peavey T40, my 85 Foundation, or my Yamaha RBX4 A2, the rest though are outta here!). :p

And my issue with the PG isn't so much that it has one. I am actually neither here nor there with a PG. Some of my basses don't have them and some do. My 1995 MIM Fender Precision Special (also known as a 'Cowpoke' if anyone is familiar with this hybrid limited production Fender) that has a PG [shape] to die for IMO. My issue with a Ric 4001/4003 PG is the shape. No offense at all to those that like them!!! I am just not at all into the shape of it but I don't mind one being there if I could get one the same color as the finish (and I want a black Ric -- Jetglo). That would make it fade into the color and I would be quite happy with that. ^_^

Kris Lyons, thanks for the welcome and I hope I find /my/ Ric right when I get the money ready for it!! As kooky as it sounds, I will know /my/ Ric when I see it. 8)

I also appreciated the better description the body of a Ric explaining why some people have problems with it. The only guitar Ive ever owned is a late 60s Lawsuit Les Paul [Black Beauty] copy (Ive owned it since 1982 and I will actually be selling it at last for the Ric I find to be mine). It has the arched top but from that point everything else is flat and sharp edged and I actually like the way its body feels to me when I do play it. I have also heard people talk that they have no place to rest their thumb playing a 4003. I tend to anchor my thumb near the neck heel and Ive studied pics of 4003s and I see the perfect spot for my thumb at least so I am confident of no issues there. ^_^

I look forward to hearing more and I can't wait to get my first Ric! Where is the market place here by the way? I looked and I must be blind cause I couldnt find it. LOL

Welcome to the forum, Nikita. There is a mapleglo Laredo on ebay right now that is about to end very soon. It's in very nice condition and the starting bid is not bad. I love the 4004 basses. To add to John Allgaier's description of the 4004 basses, I'll add that they are very light. You can do a long gig without shoulder fatigue.

Good luck with finding your first Rick.

Nickita, if you are chasing new, watch the RIC 4003 shipment page for where they go, then call.

Also, if you are thinking a used, watch the For Sale and Ebay Sightings forums, and Craiglist and the 'bay for them. Where are you located?

As for the Peavey T40, just ask Tony Cabibi about them!

I saw that one last night. If it was a Jetglo I would be in serious email negotiations about a payment extension on that bad boy!!!!! Its going to take a lot for me to come up with the money for one so I /am/ going to hold out for one just how I want and thats Jetglo.

And yes I read where Laredos were light and/or the 4003 was like 9lbs? Thats fine. Im owned by a T40 and thats like... a tree trunk with strings so everything else is light from there.

Im in central Florida. I checked the link and a Sam Ash in Tampa got one but when I click on the link it takes me to a page for Sam Ash in general and a list of the Ric models but none active...

He sounds like a T40 nut like me. 8) I had a 79 T40 back in the early 80s that I sold. I later gave up bass and got back into it late last year and all I could obsess about was getting a T40 back!! I did about February of this year and I literally hugged it when I unpacked it. Uhm, ok I guess Female lowenders can hug their axes? I ended up with an '85 dark Tobacco burst/maple neck..sweet monster that weighs as much tonnage as my '79 natural did. I've got the huge 4.5 inch padded Levy 'bass' strap and I can still only stand and play it for about an hour before my left arm goes numb from the weight (I have some nerve damage in my left shoulder and lower back for that matter so its a pain to own that monster literally but I won't let this one go for nothing!!). >_<

Just checked it out and made a post there. Its a nice one that I would like to go for!!! The trick is now to see how fast I can sell off some of my other basses and such to get the very reasonable price hes asking for it, before its gone!!

Welcome, Nickita!:D

We have members in Florida; Tony is in Stuart, Jason is in Tampa, Mark is in Jacksonville and I can't recall where Andy is but I think he is in South Florida somewhere.

If back and neck/shoulders are a problem, for sure a 4004 series will be a welcome relief for you. I loved mine but sold it as I felt the neck to be too wide as it got closer to the body, more P Bass-like. I prefer the good ol' 4001/3 necks as they don't widen up so much.

Nickita, nice to have another female aboard the RRF train. There are not enough - you, Kira, Tammy, Alisha, Mellisa, Amy, Alison; who am I missing??? Ahh, Graham and Peter!  Just kidding!

Tony is in central FLA also. Last I knew he has 3 or 4 T40s. His back is pretty bad too.
