LOL and I usually always tell people to play before they buy! And I sometimes won't think of one till I can play one first but yea, I do have good luck buying after asking and researching.ajish4 wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=004
Ok, cool! You're not too far for SERF at all!Starscream wrote:I'm in Lake Wales. Orlando is not that far away from me. I really should test drive a Ric before I get one but at the same time, I think I might be a freak in the sense that I can buy a bass cold just from doing research and asking around and I have yet to be let down. Though I do not go on the brand names laurels. Before I took a leap into my one Fender, I went to my local shop and played all the Fender basses they had (which is how I ended up getting my Squier VMJ and did you know those beasts are on par with T40s? O_O!! My Squier Jazz clocks in at 11.5 pounds and is as thick and chunky as my T40!). As contradicting at this sounds I wont go on the rep from 'Rickenbacker' but I also got a great recommendation by Eaglemoon. She knows the neck profiles I like, the sound I like and what I like to do on a bass. I talked her into trying a vintage Peavey Foundation that she loves so in a sense she has first hand experience with a bass I love (shes now knows one aspect of the type of feel that I like so to speak) and shes pretty confident I will love whatever Ric I get. Yea, its a huge gamble money wise but its also compelling me to thin out my stable which is something I really, really need to do.
I don't think you're a "freak in the sense that I can buy a bass cold just from doing the research" at all, THAT is exactly how I bought my first T-40. Mostly just doing the research on the web, asking the folks here, and from these two obscure forums....http://peaveybasses.forum-motion.net/forum.htm and http://peaveyt40.forumotion.com/login.forum?connexion.
Some Fenders are rather light. My Cowpoke is pretty light I think. Some Fenders are boat anchors. I think the older Ps were boat anchors. I do know this Squier [Fender] Jazz is a friggin COW... LOL And it was funny too cause people were talking on TB about how heavy they were and I was coming back with 'No they aren't. My VMJ is not heavy, your imagining it!' and it really didn't seem heavy. And then one day I was taking all my basses over to a neighbors house for a photo shoot and after I took the T40 over I grabbed the Squier. It was then that I realized. O_O This thing is a TANK!!!! Then I put the two side by side and WOW...very similar in their dimensions IMO. Then later someone on TB said theirs weighed in at 11.5 pounds....sheesh...I can believe that LOLWow, I wasn't aware that the Fender's were that heavy! Glad I bypassed them! These guys are enough for me! I sold off all of my Alembic basses because they were just so darn heavy.
Well so far I see the years I need to stay away from and was advised on the years to try and get that would fall under my thin neck requirement. So hopefully that will help me as I look around. If this helps, RIC"S aren't a gamble at all IF you shop around. I've NEVER lost money on one of my RICS. I tried MANY, MANY of them to find the years I like and the one's that feel and sound just right.
That is actually my first 'rig' and it came about rather unexpectedly. Ive always just had whatever decent combo amp I could afford. I wanted something different this time. Preferably a head with cabs. Well I had put this killer SWR 100 watt bass amp on layaway at my local music shop and then was offered that 115 Peavey Black Widow cab at an awesome price. Before I jumped on it I wanted to make sure I could hook that cab up to my SWR...so off I go discovering ohlms and all sorts of electrical stuff that is still greek to me LOL But in the process I found out I couldnt use the cab. In fact I found out that SWR was exactly what I didn't want. SO the day comes when I have to pay the layaway off and me and the sales guy are getting to be decent friends. I don't want to lose him out on commission as bad as things are getting with the economy but I have no use for this amp now. So we get to talking and we are looking at what amps are in the bass section. Now this was back in October and since January there had been this huge Peavey bass amp sitting there collecting dust. I had never asked about it cause it just the looks of it told me that I didn't have the money for it. Now I love Peavey basses (big understatement) and have been dying to try their amps so I ask about the amp. Yea its $899... O_O I look on the back, its got the hook up for a cab, the ohlm thingy is right (LOL) but I can't afford this...I start thinking...I smile (hehe yea sometimes its nice being a girl in all this) and Im like 'You know I love Peaveys...this things been sitting here for 10 months... I really WANT this but can't spare the money, what can we do?' He takes the tag off, goes to the 'big guy' comes back 20 minutes later and says "How does $299 grab you?"... "Dude, thats what Im paying for the SWR!" he was like 'Perfect ain't it?" So I got a Peavey Combo 210 TX for $299 and found out later when they made they were like $1499 or some such (and this puppy is mint)...OH MAN, Super Ferrites! THAT was what I was after......not in Fingerprint Glo, but THAT"S THE ONE!Starscream wrote:I have a thing for Peavey period I think. LOL They are a great under appreciated company that puts out some great products besides their amp/pa systems. And speaking of Peavey, heres a pic of my 85 Foundation and my Rig (pic too big to load here):
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc29 ... ewbaby.jpg]I'm slowly coming around to getting a second string of Peavey basses. I've never tried their amps, I take it you are happy with them?
They sure look like Super Ferrites but if they don't say it they aren't. That body is really sweet on that that beast though.....mmmmmm you know....I need to PM you I think LOLI THOUGHT this one had the SUPER FERRITE pups, it LOOKED like like them, and it was a $150.00 BUY IT NOW so I jumped....but when I opened the box, it didn't say SUPER FERRITE ON THEM. They still rock pretty good, but I'm told from other Foundation owners that they aren't the same..
From what I've heard the lightening up of them if anything ADDs to their sound. I have spoken with Chip once on the phone and he was actually apologetic about my T40 weighing so much. He had proven that a heavy wood was not needed for sustain and tone but Hartley [Peavey] would have none of it and insisted that the T40 be made in boat anchor style. It's a Natural with a Maple Neck. Yes, I'm aware of Chips' creations, it's not out of the question, but I was afraid it might change the tone. I have to send my Foundation neck to him for a DECAL replacement. I've emailed him a few times and he's a really nice guy and so helpful! The original owner of this bass scratched off the logo, all that remains is "crafted in the USA" and PEAVEY on the pups. They LOOK & ADJUST like Super Ferrite pups, but I'm wondering if these are just a later version of them?
Its ok. I kind of think Im not meant to have a black/rosewood T40. I'm always either too broke or too late to grab one. I tell you though, my 92 Foundation I tore apart and I /thought/ I had the neck sold. Well I picked up a rather rough maple T40 neck off eBay that needs some work. The fretboard is separating a bit at the heel of the neck. I was going to fix it, yank the frets, black it out and /was/ going to have it as a spare neck for my T40 but then I thought about putting it on my 92 Foundation body. That body is loaded with Super Ferrites too. The T40 neck heel is narrower then the Foundations neck so I would have to shim it on the sides...I have no idea where this is going or what I will do with these Peavey bass bits Im gathering but I know I want to make a FrankenPeavey and have it fretless, old style headstock and all 'Fingerprint Glo'OH NO.....OH NO......I JUST SOLD THE ROSEWOOD NECK I HAD for JUST THIS VERY PURPOSE! I purchased the black T-40 just to flip it. I HAD a Rosewood neck that I was going to install on the black bass and sell it. BUT, with the prices tanking, I thought I'd do better selling the neck apart from the bass.
A forum member who helped me with T-40 knobs contacted me and asked me to PLEASE kill the auction and he would take it for a project T40 he has with Chip now. The neck shipped out yesterday.
That one Dyna bass is SUWEET!!! The pup config looks like Foundation S but the headstock says DynaBass. You know they made Dyna Basses all the way up to 2000 but the model went through some design changes along the way. I personally have not run across a DynaBass with the P and J pup set up -- Ive only seen that on Foundation S's. So either thats a Foundation S with a DynaBass neck or its a DynaBass model I haven't run across yet. And its active too, the switch is there.THEN, I do a complete setup on the Fingerprint Glo, and fell in love with it. LOVE the more treble bite, I have a set of round wound strings on it, and it is a KILLER. Great neck too. BUT it is a MAPLE NECK. I thought a Black with a Rosewood would look cool too, but....DUH.......argh! I was planning on listing this bass on Ebay for money for a Dyna. I just don't know what to do with it at this point, there is a Dyna listed on Ebay now.....http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=010 but it doesn't have the Super Ferrites. I'm told that they made an ACTIVE and a PASSIVE set of Super Ferrite pickups for the Dyna? Is that true?
The black one is a nicer conditioned twin to the one I have (and mine is a monster). The case it has is factory but the /other/ one that did not come with the velvet type fabric inside. The burst one looks like a transition between the 80s style and the 90s. Look at the string tree on it, its a bar and look at the string tree on my black one, its a triangle. The bar started in 1990 and Id bet that burst one is a 90 but the pups and bridge look 80s style. The logo on the headstock looks a bit transitional as well. See if that seller will give you the serial # off of it and you can run it through and find out what year it is but Id guess 1990.Sigh, yes...I'm a sucker for a tin/narrow neck....here are the two I'm eyeballing now....http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=015 and http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=015 and from way out in left field....THIS.....http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=017
That Dyna is probably the closest thing to my dream bass Ive ever touched. BUT its a bit road worn cosmetically and that does kind of irk me (I got it off eBay and the seller was good to hide some of its scuffs and bruises). Its seen some hard gigs lets put it that way so its a 'players bass' for sure so if you are looking for a mint body sadly that one doesn't have it. As much as I love it I have thought of selling it to go toward the Ric fund (only because I'd like a blacked out in better shape cosmetically). I will have to think on it LOL I was just playing it a little while ago and in love as usual when its in my hands.OH, you DO have an active Dyna? Hmmmm, hmmmm......are you planning on selling it?

I'm sorry for steering the thread so far of course, glad Kira brought it back to center slot.
I've been trying to get Shari's Macbook back up and running; Apple had to replace both the hard drive and the Super Drive. We used Time Machine to back everything up but we can't figure out how to do the magic and make it turn the Macbook back into what it was before the problems!kiramdear wrote:Check out Jeff's recent upgrade if you can find the thread, uhhhhh hmmm, Jeff, where are you?
For someone who taught themselves bass with no guidance or knowledge I really don't have any bad habits on the neck. BUT there is one I do have and I know its because of how non set up my first bass's neck was. I have a habit of pressing down HARD on the neck. I mean I had to, to work that Memphis but it seems I fight a neck more when work with it. I realized this a few months ago when I started getting higher quality basses and ones properly set up and learning it myself. I am slowly breaking that but I will definitely keep it in mind what you said about Rics and that!!!kiramdear wrote:Thanks! My 4001 is very comfortable to play and about 8-1/2 pounds in weight. I actually put the bridge pickup cover back on and frame my hand around it when I use a pick. I found that a rick bass is a very special animal and had to adjust my style when I got her. For example, I'm used to muscling a cheaper bass in order to get more tone out of it, but the 4001 responds best to cooler and more sensitive fingering. I have the action real low; she practically plays herselfAnd I love the stereo capability and use it in my recordings. Some people like to add one of those thumbrest/tugbar thingies for comfort and appearance.
Check out Jeff's recent upgrade if you can find the thread, uhhhhh hmmm, Jeff, where are you?
Shoot I really can't afford a Ric but where theres a will theres way. I will do what I can to scrape up the scratch for one for sure and I will have one hopefully sometime in the next few short months.johnallg wrote:My thoughts: (1)Tried one and didn't bond. And Nickie talked me into getting a Foundation a few weeks ago and I promptly broke the bridge last night. Those things are hard to find replacements. Luckily I had some spare bridge saddles sitting around.
I can agree with the set up comment. I loathed my first bass but then when I finally learned about set ups and stuff a few months ago I thought back to my lawsuit memphis P and decided (even though I really disliked that beast) that I had to get one back, set it up right and see what my first bass /could/ have been. I got one back (which was not easy...a complete one with ashtrays/ thumbrest and lawsuit headstock memphis P is hard to find but I did it) and it was rather traumatizing to wrap my hand around a memphis P neck again LOL but Ive worked on its set up and its actually not that bad of a bass. Its not super good but I can see why the Memphis bass has its fans and even though I know its set up isnt as good as it could be right now, had my first one had even half of the set up this one has, I wouldnt have left that lawsuit P in 2 piece in the mud room of my old house when I moved out years ago.ajish4 wrote:I'll add one to that John, IF they had one that was set up wrong.johnallg wrote:My thoughts: (1)Tried one and didn't bond. I've experienced that, after a proper setup, the thing felt like a completely different guitar!
Long posts? Now, how often do you see that from me? That either is my longest or its in the top 3.![]()

Im sorry to say I am not familiar with Keith Haring but I can understand what you passed up by not having it painted by him.marc61 wrote:Welcome Nickita...I had a T40 in natural which had a chance to become one of the most valuable basses in the world. Me, not exactly being an art expert turned down the offer because I didn't want the paint to flake off as I was playing. The artist was Keith Haring..oh well...Starscream wrote:
