Username change, what are your thoughts?

Post by gibsonlp »

Hi guys,
This is a bit of a silly dilemma, I know, but it has bothered me for quite a while...:

A friend of mine saw that my user on this forum is "gibsonlp" and laughed at me...
GibsonLP = Gibson Les Paul, this has been my online username since my bar-mitzvah where I got a Les Paul Standard as a Bar-Mitzvah gift...
It (the username) has been following me ever since (We are talking ~15 years!)

However - having a such a username in a Rickenbacker forum, might be, ummm... tacky...
So, what do you say - should it stay or should it go?
So long and thanks for all the fish!

Doesn't bother me i tend to look at people`s real names not their user names.

I didn't even think twice about it when I first saw your user name. If you've been comfortable with it for 15 years, there's no reason to second guess yourself now. Besides, it would be pretty shallow of someone to judge another forum member based on their user name. I think the vast majority of us don't play Rickenbacker instruments exclusively... we all play Gibsons, Fenders, Gretsches, etc next to our Ricks. So it's really a non-issue, Gil...at least for me, anyway.

I don't think it's the slightest bit inappropriate. Keep it for the good reason you mentioned and be comfortable here first of all, as far as I'm concerned. :D

Now what's weird is one girl here that changes her avatar every week

A username is just a piece of code; it could be just nonsense. At least yours shows you have good taste. An old boyfriend gave me mine when he called me "Kira, m'dear" (it sort of rhymes). I didn't keep him but the name stuck. We're still friends

As they say in the Bronx, "Fuggetaboutit"

None of us judge! Sure, when you think about it, it's ironic (especially as you're an admin), but I think of you as Gil, not a username!

In fact, I really like how people's real names are displayed next to their username, because this forum often leads to real-life meetups, in which I know people by their real names, not some silly username. :D

Cheers,

Disatnik comes from Desiatnik, Russian for "foreman, overseer (of 10 workers)". Does that describe you better?

Actually it's a military term, Diset = 10, Disetnik = a commander of 10 soldiers (mainly paratroopers)
And no, that does not describe me better :)

10 is actually "desiat'" (десять), as Ilan has pointed out. But it's a military term, that's correct.
Oh, and — i don't think that'll change anything, but gibsonlp doesn't sound "incorrect" to me.

Gil, good move to save your identity. Who reads usernames anyway? I've got mine for the same reason, that it was given to me (like your guitar   ) about 13-14 years ago and it has stuck since.

I am a bit late to this thread but YES Gil do keep your user identity. It suits you.
