Jeff Lynne and Rickenbackers

Post by admin »

Apparently Jeff Lynne played a 620/12 Fireglo with the Travelling Wilburys. Does anyone have a photo of Jeff with this instrument.

Peter, I think that guitar is none other than Mike Campbell's 1963 625/12 that Tom Petty is holding on the cover of the 'Damn the Torpedoes' album. It sure looks like it in the video of the Wilburys doing 'Handle Me With Care'. Those guys were always going "Here, play this" alot at that time. Mike Campbell plays George Harrison's Psychadellic Strat on a Petty song which I can't recall at the moment, but yeah, I think Jeff Lynne is using the Campbell 625/12...

Jeff Lynne used electric 12strings on the '93 Julianna Raye album Something Peculiar which he entirely played and produced, I don't know if he used Ricks. You can hear an electric 12 on his new version of Xanadu on the Flashback box set. By the time of his '90 solo album Armchair Theater he was Gretsch endorser. It would be great to see and hear him with Ricks on his new album 'Zoom' in April and the tour that they talk about...

I think Jeff Lynne used a (breadwinner?) Ovation 12 string solidbody electric in the 70s and 80s, the one that looks like a axe...YUK! sorry Jeff, but thats ugly...at least he switched to Gretsches...

I think that the Ovation looked quite good...talking about 12strings, he used a SG doubleneck in the studio.

Actually he played an Ovation DEACON 12 string. I have one I bought new in 1974. I bought it because no dealer in my area carried RIC in those days. It's still one of the best sounding electric 12's I've ever played. In the mid 80's I added a RIC 360/12 to my collection, but as far as traditionally strung electric 12's go it is an amazing piece. They're still undervalued in the market place, but get past the looks (which I happen to like) and you'll find a real player.

There was some information about his guitars in an recent interview, shame he said nothing about Ricks. He used a '66 Telecaster on the new album.
