How long would it take a guitar stand to damage finish?

So I recently picked up a 360/12v64 - 10 years old. I love it.

I was doing some tiding up on the weekend, and I put the Ric on my guitar stand. Which is just like this one:



It was on there for about an hour, maybe a bit less. Then it hit me...the finish! I picked it up and there was some slight yellowing on the bottom around the white binding.

Thing is, I dont know if this was there when I got it. I hadnt really looked closely at the base.

Would it have been possible for the stand to damage the finish in this time frame?

Anything's possible, but it seems highly unlikely that an hour would make that much difference.

I reeeeaally doubt that an hour would make a difference at all. Even a week should hardly make a difference.

I can't remember (Paul W can probably fill you in on the difference in substance), but certain guitar stands were fine, and others weren't.

No padding wasn't wet. I didn't think it would damage it.
Must have been like this when I got it. I dont even mind. Adds a bit of character.

I've got four of those stands. I've put everything from new refins on them to old Ricks, Gibsons, Fenders finished in every finish known to man, a couple of oiled finish 380s, etc., etc., and have yet to see any marks at all. In the case of one of these stands, guitars were stored on it under a sheet in my office for about 18 months with no problem.

But a lot of guys here think they are nasty stuff, so all I can say is, YMMV...

I've been using two of those stands (Warwick Rockstand) for the last couple years with no finish damage to any Rickenbacker, Fender, Gibson, or Hofners.

Not to mention I had a 10 year old MG 360/12V64 that sat on one of those stands for 6 months and didn't pick up any markings from it.

I have had two Ricks yellowed in spots by that exact model and make of stand. Of course, remember I'm in Humidity Central down here, so perhaps that's an accelerator.

Yep, a change in humidity can do it. I've had one out of four stands stain guitars... (all the same make, but different batches - so there must have been something dodgy about that one stand)... and it happened just after we had a massive swing in humidity here... (from around 30% to 80%).

I don't put newer Ricks or Gibsons in any of my stands anymore. I have found that all of my Ricks made since 1988 react with stands. None of my Gibsons are vintage, and they all do it too. The first big problem I ever had involved having my brand new '89 1997VB react with a stand. Last year I took that same guitar to a jam session. It was only in the stand for about an hour, and the finish softened again. I've got a '06 1996 AFG that has a finish so soft that the lining inside the reissue silver case has etched the finish. It's a shame that I can't display my Ricks and Gibsons...

Sure... refinish!

Seriously, that's really about the only thing that can be done as it's a chemical reaction between the finish and the materials of the stand.

If it's not too deep, I'll bet Scratch X and Zymol might help.

seems to me that if you have any doubt wrap the dividers in sheepskin (non oily ) or natural cotton material
