Underrated and Overrated

And yes, I agree with the others who say Danelectros are underrated. One of my ex-bandmates had a Longhorn bass that sounded fantastic through his rig. It was hard to believe something constructed that cheaply (and I mean that in a good way) could sound so good.

People (including me) think of Danos and they immediately picture masonite guitars with that weird tape around the edge that always shrinks and peels.

The Korea-made RI I've got is real wood, no tape, absolute top quality parts fit and finish. Flawless blackburst paint. The shape is the familiar longhorn, but the rest is yonks better.

Wow...I don't think I've ever seen one of those. I'm only familiar with the masonite ones. This one sounds really interesting. Do you happen to have any photos, Paul?

There's something to that statement.
Of course, you could always do what I did: Cheat.
Put Toaster covers on the HiGains. You get the "cosmetic coolness" factor of the toasters and you get to keep the HiGain sound.

I just bought a new Martin D-16. It's my desert island acoustic. Love Guild maple bodies. Epiphones are a great value and sweet. Agreed about the Taylors, they're cold and sterile.

I have two Martins, a D-28 and 35. While I enjoy them both, I tend to think they are overrated. I also have an Epi Masterbilt and for the price it is superb.

But I had a chance to play Gary F.'s Lowden for a couple of weeks. Sweet; big, mellow sound with lots of character. A good friend has a Lariveé...also very sweet sound and playability. The Lowden had a definite handbuilt feeling to it, in a sort of arts-and-crafts way. The Lariveé was slicker.

But Ricks are slickest of all. And I can't take credit for that...the DNA was already firmly in place; I'm only the replicator.

That's an apt description. I've called them the "Lexus" of acoustics; they are not cheap, well-crafted (although the bolt-on neck, though expedient, is anti-craft IMO) and well-finished, consistently of very good quality, do their job well, sell like the proverbial haute cakes, and leave you hungry a half-hour later...their character seems to be no character. Lots of folks love them for just this feature, though. Take a look at the threads on various acoustic guitar forums.

I've been to the Taylor factory a couple times, and it is kinda weird. I didn't know that about the scientology bit, just makes it even weirder. As for other acoustics, I like my Martin. It's a lot like Fender and Gibson though: there are good ones out there but there's a lot of **** too. In general, standard models never really attract me. I always fall for the usually pricier but also better made vintage reissues. ('57 Strat RI, '57 LP RI, OM Martin, 4001C64)

Best Bang/Buck acoustics I can think of are Yamaha Acoustics (good deals used, try before buying though) and Larrivee continues to make wonderful guitars are down to earth prices.

If you're on a tight budget, Yamaha is probably your best bet for quality at a low price. Couldn't get more boring, but they are fine guitars.

Meh, most acoustics have the same general look... Martins Headstock has to be the dullest for me...


However, nothing is worse than Martin's high end super gaudy "Let's see how much abalone we can squeeze in" Guitars.
