Underrated and Overrated

Best Bang/Buck acoustics I can think of are Yamaha Acoustics (good deals used, try before buying though) and Larrivee continues to make wonderful guitars are down to earth prices.

Nick, have you looked at the Takamine G-Series?

Wow, nice OM, Wes. I tried one when I was shopping and they are beautiful.

My D16RGT has outstanding tone and was only a few hundred more than the laminates. I wanted the OM but it was almost a thousand more The GT means you're not paying another 300 bucks for the buff job on the back and sides, I think.

Meh, most acoustics have the same general look... Martins Headstock has to be the dullest for me...
However, nothing is worse than Martin's high end super gaudy "Let's see how much abalone we can squeeze in" Guitars.

I totally agree on the abalone, hate it. But seriously, look at my Martin a few posts back and tell me it looks like a Yamaha. Yes they're both made of wood and have a hole in them, but other than that there's just no comparison.

Wow, nice OM Wes! Always liked Martins and Gibsons best, never played a Taylor I liked.

I've always liked how Gibson acoustics look, but haven't found one that plays nearly as well as my OM-28V. It's got a killer V neck that is really comfortable. I like the Martin 000 body better than dreadnaught or round shoulders too.

If you like electric archtop guitars, I think Guilds are underrated and you can still get a great deal on them.

I have a 1968 blond CE-100-D with a guild bigsby, very well played, that i love - and a DE-500 Duane Eddy model from 1964. You can get them for about 1/2 the price of a similar Gibson (or less) and they rock.

Overrrated? Gibson and Fender "aged", "relic'd", and Artist limeted editions.

Guilds are definitely cool guitars. They've made some really great models over the years, I wouldn't mind having a nice vintage one.

Larrivees are sweet. And for the quality you get, thay are a pretty good bang for the buck. But as far as acoustics are concerned, I must confess I am a Gibson man. The J-45 is king.

It's a different strokes thing I guess, even that one has a bit too much sizzle for my taste, I think it's the pickguard.

I've always been a big fan of my fathers guitar, I played it the other day...





But for "tone".... NOTHING Beats a $25 Ukulele your friend lends you!

Got to say I love my Larrivée LV-19. Great sweet tone and the neck is great for fingerstyle playing.

haha, me either. Every one I've ever owned started having the neck pull on on me (despite every step I could try to avoid it), so I just said, "fuggetaboutit"

I only have one, and have only ever had one at a time. I really don't play it too much, but when I need it on a recording it always sounds great.

For acoustics, I'll go with Martin for sound and Alvarez for affordability - They're the best for the money that I've played. Also used to like Talkamine & Guild. Haven't played a budget Yamaha in years, but they never did anything for me.

The worst in my opinion - Ovation and Fender...(anyone throwing anything?)

IMHO Overratted I agree, fender Strats, Gibsons SG and Les pauls. Great instruments but a dime a dozen so to speak.
Actually a doz of these guys can run you big bucks.

underrated:

original BC Rich (Bernie Rico sr) guitars are some of the finest instruments made both in looks and sound. He was a lousy business man. so he sold he name to some corp that made garabge NJ models for years, still are I think.

I played a Mockinbird bass back in the late 70"s they were going for $1200 while Ricks which I love were only $400.

Other truly spectacular guitars, early 80's Hammer's were quite good, Tobias, early custom Lakeland's, but these are very pricey!

Bang for the Buck i think ricks are still the best overall value.
