Re: Frying pan on Ebay
Marc,
Way to man-up. I don't know which is in order, congratulations or condolences.
You probably don't realize it, but you're in deep doo doo. By that I mean you are a collector.
Now that you've ponied up that much cash for a lap steel, almost every lap steel you find will seem cheap by comparison.
Predictions:
1. You will soon join the Steel Guitar Forum an will check the Steel Without Pedals section almost daily.
2. You will soon become a lap steel addict and with a little work you become somewhat proficient.
3. You will soon become very knowledgeable about vintage lap steels in general.
4. By this time next year you will have acquired at least two more lap steels, at least one of which will not be Richenbacher.
Keep us updated and let me know how accurate my predictions are.
Richard

Re: Frying pan on Ebay
I've been cursed!(in a good way) Actually, this is punishment for the poor steels I ripped apart just to get at the shoes.rshatz wrote:Marc,

Do a Townshend in front of Evan with it and he will fully understand!marc61 wrote:I'm actually wondering if I can properly explain the guitar's significance to my son.

Anticipation time. I am expecting to pick it up on Friday.
I guess I'll need a slide, and an education on how to tune it...maybe get some new strings..GC gave me $15 to spend this weekend..whoopie!

Re: Frying pan on Ebay
seems like a good start. Thanks John
Re: Frying pan on Ebay
Marc,
The tuning you choose should to a great extent be determined by the type of music you want to play. The easiest tunings for rock and blues guitar players to learn are
E :
EBG#EBE
D:
DAF#DAD
Country players seem to like C6, but many use A6 and other 6th tunings. There are several ways to do this.
These are the most basic tunings. There are many others. Check out the Steel Guitar Forum for multiple discussions.
There are at least as many tone bar shapes, sizes and weights as there are tunings. They are also made of many different materials, and they all sound different.

Cool, Marc has a whole new category of toys to collect!rshatz wrote:There are at least as many tone bar shapes, sizes and weights as there are tunings. They are also made of many different materials, and they all sound different.
Re: Frying pan on Ebay
got it and unpacked it. I feel like it's something that should be in a museum...but to heck with that, I'm gonna set it up and play it.
Amp looks to be in great shape, maybe better than the guitar.
Only issue is it needs a tuner head on the fourth string(going low to high) and the tuner on the third string tuner is slightly bent, making the gear slip a little.
Are new or replacement tuners available without drilling holes and stuff?

Re: Frying pan on Ebay
Don't f with the machines.
Go to Stewmac.com.
Just buy the buttons.
Another solution. Stewmac.com
Replace the machines with the replicas. Save the originals.
Have fun.

Re: Frying pan on Ebay
yeah Richard..thanks....I went for these:
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guit ... ghead.html
of course I will keep the originals. It's just that the tuner missing the peg looks kind of stripped, and the bent tuner might be a problem.
