Guitars in Pairs

I was recently thinking about how John & Paul acquired the Martin D-28's after I saw the Paul Saltzman India Photos at a gallery. Did Martin Guitars give them to John and Paul? But then why did George not get one? The Beatles Gear book only states the 1st D-28 showed up with John on the Hello Goodbye video possibly to replace the heavily painted J-160E. Did Paul possibly tag along with John to a music store or was Mal dispatched by John and Paul said pick one up for me too?

So then I thought back about the circumstances about the other guitars that were bought in pairs and its interesting that they did this on several occassions.

Gibson J-160E's - John and George bought them together at a Music Store.

Epiphone Casinos- John & George wanted their own after lusting after Pauls. Any ideas where they were bought or who actually bought them?

Fender Stratocasters- Mal was dispatched to pick them up in matching colors for John & George.

From what I gather Rickenbacker seems to have given John, George, and Paul each a Rickenbacker over time but no matching models?

That is a good question! Everything I find says that they each purchased them. The McCartney version is a bit different with a different headstock and knob color apparently. I ready recently that he bought his Epi (the first one) because he was wanting to experiment with the hollow body and the natural tendency to feedback.

Hey Tim... yes, that guitar has been the subject of a little talk here. I bought it from a forum member who got it from another forum member.
It's a Rick Tuxedo that has been stripped and refinished. Apparently it once looked like:

The main difference is that it is all-maple, which aside from being lighter than a rosewood 360, it has a different (and nicer/sweeter IMHO) tone. Very groovy guitar indeed. Certainly unique.

Yea, based on how mine came out, I think a Tuxedo is a prime candidate for a strip/refinish job..... ONLY in the hands of a very exzperienced person of course. I would NEVER attempt something like that. Since the fretboard needs to be stripped as well, I would think the frets themselves would need to be taken out (not a show-stopper - even I did that once on a cheap guitar)

Like I said, the gold nugget under all that paint is the All-Maple guitar...... Naturally, the possibilities are endless and I'd LOVE to see someone give it a go. The only problem is that one has to obtain a Tuxedo to begin with, eh? It's hard to find pix of Ric Tuxedo's on the web, but I do notice there is also a Tuxedo bass:

Yes. For those of you not well versed in the basses, the Tuxedo bass is one of three "4003SPC" models from the late '80s. All had maple fretboards and tiny "microdot" position markers. These were "S" basses with no binding and no Ric-O-Sound. The other two were the "Redneck," with all the wood painted fire-engine red (not metallic and not translucent), and the "Blackstar" with all the wood painted Jetglo. The hardware and pickguards for all three were black (except for the chrome treble-pickup cover on the Blackstar). The Tuxedo scheme was the only one of the three to be applied to the guitar (just the 360?).

I'd love to find a beat Tuxedo bass and have it stripped and refinished natural. Anyone wanna make me an offer?
