Dare I say? 2009 COY?

Post by bassduke49 »

Is it too early or presumptive to think about what (or whether) there will be in our future for a new color choice? I recall Ben or Eric hoping they could return to the Color Of the Year program, but I'm sure it all depended on them getting a handle on the production backlog.

I saw (briefly) that there is a discussion on this subject on the RIC forum, but I couldn't get into it before their server(?) went south again a few minutes ago. Anyone want to speculate?

I'm very doubtful that there will be a COY in '09. And the reason is I don't think they are anywhere near caught up on their 360 orders yet.

My speculation is that it is a connectivity problem and not a server problem. (so much for bad quoting ;-))

JH mentioned last week they were having trouble with their T1 line. Also, since both servers can't be reached (.com & .net), it would seem to be a connectivity issue (or maybe a power issue if they don't have everything on a UPS).

Upstream from us . . . no problems here. Most likely related to the heavy rain we've been having.

We've had nothing but problems with our T1 over the past year due to water getting to the line. We're currently waiting for the installation of a fibre data cable - it can't come soon enough!
Tech talk aside John, any comment on the possibility of a 2009 COY?

Hmm, I think we'd know by now. :D

On the other hand, one can always go for a refinish and have one's own personal COY  . Here's mine in progress. I should have it here in my hands by the new year. Full detail photos of the completed job to be posted once I have them:

If there is a COY, they're not going to tell you about it.

As long as you've been waiting for your 4004, as long as Jim has been waiting for his 360/12, as long as I've been waiting for my 360/12c63 - You really think RIC is anywhere close to getting a handle on the backlog?

They usually announce it the week of NAMM, actually.

It would cost me, but I would love a return to Burgundy. Perfect with the small headstock and full width inlays, or dots :D Imagine a new 4003 in BG  Gorgeous.

IMO, in a perfect, backlog-less world Burgundy would be a standard color along with Montezuma Brown, White and Ruby.

Bizarrely, I typed that and then went to Rickenbacker.com...those colors were all on the '82 pricelist!

I dunno. I'd like to think that if there wasn't going to be a COY for the coming year, then JH or someone from RIC would have probably already told us. I can't think of a reason why anyone at RIC would want to give us false hopes or keep us dangling in the wind about it.

I mean, JH himself already posted to this thread and didn't comment on the COY issue. Was he strategically circumventing the subject? Now, I could be wrong, but I'd like to believe that if there wasn't going to be one, he (or someone at RIC) would just be straight with us and simply tell us so. I mean, what purpose does it serve to keep us in the dark? We're all big boys (and girls) and can handle the truth...and if there isn't going to be one, then I'm sure there's a legitimate reason why not. Sure, it would be a bit disappointing, but life would go on.

The only other reason I can think of for the "radio silence" is that RIC hasn't made a final decision on it yet. So I see it as sort of a "no news is good news" kind of thing. Of course, I could be reading too much into all this, but I'm trying to stay optimistic.

I think it's pretty much standard operating procedure for RIC and JH. They make announcements when they decide to do it, usually at NAMM or similar events. Nice to think that somehow we RIC enthusiasts would have an "inside track" on things, but I think JH is careful to keep things pretty much even and fair for everyone, forumites or not...

I think JH finds reading the speculation interesting and fun. I think he posts the official word in December most years.

I'm betting: the next COY won't be hamburgerglow.
