Wow, for $689, one can buy a much more accurate reproduction of the Brian Jones model from Phantom Guitar Works: http://www.phantomguitars.com/

Eastwood sucks. They cash in on the retro crowd, but their guitars (IMO) are pure chinese rubbish.
PGW, on the other hand, are great guitars. Used to own a Seafoam green teardrop myself. Great value for money.
Speaking of Brian Jones model Vox's, I just scored this Vox 50th anniversay Teardrop on Ebay the other day:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0287719355

Real Vox name, limited edition (of 100) commemorative anniversay models (with "57-07" inlayed on the fretboard, with OHSC etc. Looks pretty good for the price (less than a new PGW BJ teardrop with case).
Any idea if a PGW backpad will fit on a reissue Vox teardrop? That's the only thing mine is missing.
Cheers,
-Collin

I'm not sure about the reissue Voxes, but the PGW reissue backpads fit on original Vox guitars. The only difference is the size of the snaps and snap backs; the PGW snaps and snap baccks are of a larger diameter, but the snap backs fit right in the same screw holes as the originals, and the cover is the same diameter. The reissue back pads are also made from a more durable material than the originals.

Man, Collin, you're just on a roll lately. Pretty sweet deal you got there.
Re: Brian Jones White Teardrop Copy $550 BIN on ebay
wow, yeah- that one is already way past it. Maybe because that one is pictured with the case, and the fact that it's an anniversary model is well-advertised. Mine made no mention of it (it's being sold by a freight liquidation company...), so....cool!octagon wrote: You got a great deal Collin look at the bidding on this one!

Thanks! Yeah, I guess I am on a roll. When it rains, it pours right? We'll see how long it (or my checkbook) can last.1965 wrote:Man, Collin, you're just on a roll lately. Pretty sweet deal you got there.

As someone who owns an Eastwood bass and two Phantom basses I COMPLETELY disagree. I've had ZERO problems with the Eastwood, and both Phantoms have had electronics problems and on one the fingerboard seperated from the neck.collin wrote:

What model Eastwood do/did you own?

I think their latest *copies* are better than they used to be. That guitar in the original post looks like ****, or at least it doesn't look like a VOX. The only thing they have in common is the shape.iamthebassman wrote:As someone who owns an Eastwood bass and two Phantom basses I COMPLETELY disagree. Two guys in my old band both bought and owned a pair of these basses at the same time:iamthebassman wrote:As someone who owns an Eastwood bass and two Phantom basses I COMPLETELY disagree. (Eastwood "classic 4" bass)
Both had cheesy thin sounding (somewhat microphonic) pickups, tuners wouldn't hold tune through a song, and the overall fit/finish just felt cheap.
I spent a lot of time playing one of the basses too, trying to like it (as the price is great, style is cool), but no bueno. Both guys sold them within 6 months too..
I've also played a good number of other Eastwoods, at NAMM a couple years back and in some shops. Especially disliked their "Hi Flier" copy guitar (Copy of a Univox Hi Flier that is itself roughly a mosrite copy). Really didn't dig the feel or sound. I also played an older Phantom copy (same era as this teardrop) and thought it was really weird, compared to a PGW version.
Yup I agree. That's how the phantom was too. Like Eastwood is great at getting the "general" idea of a copy, but never the details that make it look legit. To me, an Eastwood Phantom is about an accurate a copy as a Domino Californian. Close on the paddle shape, but way way off. As off as a Rickenfaker is.1965 wrote: I think their latest *copies* are better than they used to be. That guitar in the original post looks like ****, or at least it doesn't look like a VOX. Some people could care less, but IMO, when there is a great easily affordable alternative on the market, it makes little sense to go with the worse copy. In my experience, the Phantom was a fantastic guitar- zero problems, great customer support if needed, I wouldn't have sold it if I wasn't crunched for cash at the time and knew I could replace it when necessary.

I think "rubbish" is a bit strong, Collin.
Mike Robinson is a good guy who's in it because he's nutz for vintage gear.
I don't agree with all of his wacky marketing decisions, but every Eastwood I've owned (only in the past 4 years, I hasten to add) has been great value for money, and in some cases made much better than the originals were, regardless of where they were made. I've still got two of 'em, and when he does another that appeals to me, I'll be picking one up.
That having been said, the Phantom is a much better copy of the BJ.

Alright, alright...rubbish is a bit too strong a word. Rubbish would imply that they were on par with garbage, and I certainly wouldn't have thrown it away
Mike does have an interesting take on the guitar market, that's for sure. The concept is pretty cool, and you're absolutely right- in some cases the guitars (the Airlines in particular) play better than the originals, which is either a good remark for Eastwood, or a bad one for the original maker (depending on how you see it!).
Cheers,
-Collin
