Re: Favorite contemporary standard finish?
My feelings on this rich and complicated thread are well known by the few here that know my MO. My collection has a singular thread running through it, and has been a near obsession for nearly 20 years. I've been all around the world, literally, as well as countless nights with no sleep searching for that which eludes me. I've hunted my own white whale, and have sunk the harpoon many times. There's only a scant few models left from the era and color of my obsession. In short, my answer is: Blue Floral.
Oh ****. Wrong forum. I got wrapped up in my rhetoric. I like mapleglo. I think its pretty.

Small body guitars, like the 620 or 350, Jetglo. Larger bodies like the 330 or 360, Fireglo. Basses look cool in either finish.
Jangle, Chime & Twang.

Can anybody think of a non-RIC finish similar to MID? I can't really. Most of the ones I've seen are either ultra-deep blue or really light, but MID seems like its own thing.

AFG. Come on, it's almost standard.

It is kind of intriguing...AFG is formulated, sprayed and comes out as a COY, only to be supplanted by a "standard" FG that blows the pickups off of it. I loved AFG until I saw the "new" FGs, which utterly raise the ante on vintage finishes by any manufacturer.

It really is its own thing... And it's many things. It looks quite different under various lighting conditions... It is a metallic finish,(which I was never a fan of, either) but it's a very fine metallic.. You don't notice it at first, or at all, unless you look closely... But when the light hits it, it really comes alive.cassius987 wrote:Can anybody think of a non-RIC finish similar to MID? I can't really. JG for me. I used to be a FG fan back in the 60's and It would now be my second choice.

I gotta have that deep yellow center though.jingle_jangle wrote:It is kind of intriguing...AFG is formulated, sprayed and comes out as a COY, only to be supplanted by a "standard" FG that blows the pickups off of it. Jetglo goes with everything and shows off ones hands the best. Fireglo steals the show, like working with a cute kid

Too atypically Ric for me...which I suppose is why it's the favorite-a clear majority of Rickenfolk have at least one FG Rickenbacker.

Re: Favorite contemporary standard finish?
At a healthy sample of 50, FG is far and away the winner, holding nearly 3 times as many votes as MG or JG which are tied for second. MID is right behind MG and JG, and interestingly, several people have said they like them all equally... and one person doesn't like any of them! Burn the heretic!
...Just kidding.
I guess I'm not surprised. Red is a stimulating color that causes people to take notice; it increases appetite and libido according to some studies. Black and natural maple are opposite ends of the same thing, neutral colors that are versatile--and while black is the ultimate in high-class, maple is "earthy", generally inviting girls in long, loose skirts to dance in mud. Blue is a calming color that lets people to relax, and I think also has some connotations in psychedelic drug culture. (Allow me to call my cousin.)

I think AFG is one of those finishes you can "get lost in" if you look at it too closely. There is so much subtle richness, especially as you say in the center yellow region that hardly even gets looked at when you're on stage.1965 wrote:I gotta have that deep yellow center though.jingle_jangle wrote:It is kind of intriguing...AFG is formulated, sprayed and comes out as a COY, only to be supplanted by a "standard" FG that blows the pickups off of it. Interesting observation, Kira. I usually pretend that my audience is totally blind, and doesn't care a fig about the appearance of my hands, or the color of my guitar. But being a blind audience, they can hear every nuance and musical inflection, which is more important to me.kiramdear wrote:Jetglo goes with everything and shows off ones hands the best. Changing perspective: It might work to my advantage visually speaking to wear a navy blue suit, or a navy blue suit with subtle pinstripes, a black guitar strap, with that eye-poppin', full width inlay FG 360/12 string. That would set off my silver hair quite nicely.
