Model of the Week Six: Rare, unusual, desirable - the 4002

Post by bassduke49 »

RIC's bass for studio recording, or a shot across the bow of the Alembic upstart? Maybe, maybe. The 4002 was another of the class of 1975 (as far as I can tell, the earliest marketing) along with the 4080 doubleneck and the 4008 dreadnought. I know there aren't many out there, but let's post photos and discuss the 4002 -- our "visions of sugarplums" just before Christmas and Hanukka.

Sugarplums indeed... God I want one of these. In FL especially but Ginger's is the only one I've ever seen.

Bryce, is yours one of those in the registry? There are three nice examples there.

Definitely one for the wish list, because it's unlikely it'll ever be on my gear list.

among the many nice things about the 4002,my favorite thing is the position of the pickups, esp. the bridge pickup, and the unfinished ebony fretboard. those 2 factors contributed to some very nice and different tones, somewhat like a jazz bass. the one i had for over a decade never had the original pickups,so i can't comment on those.....i also really liked the binding on the headstock.....(the only place i like binding... ) mine was the walnut color, but i've always had a thing for mapleglo ricks......

Yeah, gotta like the 4002! If my personal economics had been better this year, I would have bought that one from Olivias a few weeks back... :(
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Yeah, whatever happened to the one at Olivia's?

Do I remember it selling to a Forum member?

The three 4002's with photos in the register are Mine, David McDonald's and the one from Olivia's (Someone collected the info on the Olivia's bass and posted it to the register).

For those who don't know the saga of my 4002 I snagged it off eBay earlier this year (Feb, maybe?) brought it home and spent 2 or 3 months (in my spare time) cleaning it up and refurbishing it. She was pretty filthy and had some rusty screws and corrosion on the hardware, but she cleaned up nice.

Here's a couple before pics:
