Night and day difference with the heat gun. It seems to have taken the outer layer of paint off very quickly, and done little to the coating underneath ('04 Squier Jagmaster). Is the DA sander the best next step?

I wonder if the same stuff was used on the first few "highway one" models...
I have a "daphne blue" 2003 hwy 1 jazz, which I stripped to bare wood (or did I?) and did up with (ReRanch) spray-can nitro; white primer and many coats of fender blonde, then multiple coats of clear gloss. This made a pale yellow color that fender doesn't seem to offer, which looks to me like a nicely aged vintage white.
But I digest...

The hwy 1 finish practically falls off with lightly applied sand paper. I may have spent a couple hours, tops. It sure looked liked wood, but that was actually the plastic coating?

It sure fooled me, it did.

(If anyone's curious, here's a picture of how it turned out)

DA with #100 aluminum oxide paper. Wear a dust mask. No smoking, etc...
