Let's meet . . . Dusan Palka

Post by bassduke49 »

I think it might be nice to start a thread in the General section showing some mug shots of some of the members. I know a have trouble connecting names with faces, and maybe this may help others. Dusan (pronounced like duZHAN, right, Dusan?) lives outside of Buffalo, NY, and hails from the Czech Republic. He was kind enough to invite me over to see some of his large collection, although when I visited 12/28, he had just had to rescue his collection from impending flood waters during a high temp, high wind, high water weather event. I did get to sample his newly acquired 4005 (from Emerald City), and got this shot of him as well:

I had always thought that Dusan lived in Europe. Dunno why. But it's nice to know that he's closer than I thought :D

Unfortunately, I did not take my camera with me when I met with Dusan last January.

yeah that was nice visit, it would have been better shot if we haven't have high seas here in west seneca ;) and i wasn't dead tired from the rescue mission the day before. i could have been surrounded by rics but hey they were safe in upper levels that day. the name is pronounced more like: [dooshawn ] or [d'shawn] since the "u" in dusan sounds only like short "oo" in czech. cheers!
dusan palka who is also known as grazioso on infamous auction web site

Dusan, how many years ago was it that we first corresponded? I'm sure it's at least 25 years now.

Prior to the 1989 "Velvet Revolution" in Czechoslovakia, it was impossible for guitar players to get western guitar products. Czech musicians developed a basic barter system, sending instrument makers in the US custom picks and other trinkets asking if we would send sets of strings in return. In the beginning I think most companies, including ours enjoyed helping out a bit and complied, but over time the requests flooded in, making it impossible.

How about putting some perspective on that, Dusan?

BTW, Dusan hasn't mentioned it here before, I don't believe, but he used to do some of the earliest western rock 'n roll radio programming on Radio Prague. That would be an interesting story too.

How the world has changed! You've been living here, and I go to your home country for vacations!
