Is the fade on that fireglo really as abrupt as it seems? There appears to be no transition at all

Here's another shot, I think the lighting, and slide film I used on that, contributed to the harsh appearance of the transition. I started using negative film after the shots of the 330-12, and digital more recently - both allow better control of the contrast. I don't have the 330-12 anymore (just the 360-12) so I can't re-shoot it. It was a deeper, and slightly more amber Fireglo than most of the years that followed. When I bought my 360-12, I wanted either a Montezuma Brown (too hard to get) or a Fireglo. However the Fireglo's around 2003 were way too pink, so I got the Mapleglo.

Both transparency film and digital have a fairly short scale and dynamic range, respectively, but digital is getting a bit better as time goes on. Negative (C41) film has a much longer tonal scale so that is perfect, although tungsten balanced E-6 films are much better in that respect than daylight balanced E-6 film. HDR techniques in Photoshop help in making it better as long as you have at least two different exposures to work with, one favoring the shadows and the other favoring the highlights.

The 330-12 shots were done with Ektachrome 64T(E6 transparency, Tungsten balanced), the 620-12 shot were done with Kodacolor VPL (C41 negative - tungsten balanced), and the 360-12 shots done with a Canon EOS 20D digital. I shot the 330-12 before VPL became available in the 35mm format, since I don't own a film scanner that can handle medium format negatives. My first choice has always been to shoot with negatives, the latitude and dynamic range have always been superior. While digital in theory, has a narrower range than negative film, the results on screen and on paper are more than enough. When Kodak discontinued my beloved Royal Gold I made the switch to digital, and have never looked back.

No one makes any tungsten balanced film anymore.! We like using hot lights in our studio, so we don't have any options anymore, truly a loss to the photography world IMHO. For the most part our Hasselblads are gathering dust except for outdoor or b&w shoots. I have a 30D but when I need to I pull out the Ebony.
