325C58 Intonation problem

I have just acquired a new 325C58 and changed the Kauffman for a Bigsby and did an action set-up etc. I had real trouble intonating (of all strings) the D string. I had to move the bridge plate back and move the D saddle almost completely back to get it right. This of course precluded using a Bowtie bridge---the other strings were very close to correct with the bowtie, but not the D. It was way sharp, so I stayed with the roller bridge. I've set up my own guitars for years and I've never had a D string be a problem of this magnitude----B yes, E6 yes but never a D string! The strings are D'Addario Chromes .012-.052 This one really has me stumped! Any suggestions as to what might be the problem?

huh, have you changed the string? it might be a bum one, they happen from time to time...

I think of that because usually D's require less compensation than the A and low E, If that doesn't work, you could check to see if your pickups are too high, they always made me strats intonation wrong (though the pups were higher output than the C58.

Another options is to switch to a lighter D string.

I tried a new string and by golly---you were right! It corrected the problem----the string was indeed a 'bum" string!
Many thanks for the tip---it's a first time for me in 30+ years of playing that I've ever had a brand new string be that bad.
It sounded good and played good----just way out intonation wise.
